Hi folks. I've just now caught up with all your comments and it's amazing to see the great differences in how each one of us heal after these big opperations. While I'm very grateful to the surgeons for taking on a revision hip transplant. It took almost 7 hours. I'm still not able to drive my car as my operated hip is still very numb from mid thigh to knee. I can't drive my car. I live in Alicante so left side drive and right hip opp. I tried a short trip last week and had to use my right hand to lift my thigh up each time I needed to brake . So no more driving.
It's great to be finally out of that terribly bone on metal pain as my old prosthesis was 15 years old. I've had 4 total hip opperations.
I still need a crutch and steps are tough. But, each day is a tiny bit better than the day before but only if I push myself to walk and exercise twice a day. Inaction puts me back a day or two. I've cut down on painkillers , just two tramadol daily and a sleeping pill at night and hope to cut down more in time.
Keep moving please, it's a true saying- use it or lose it. I'm going to start painting my sitting room tomorrow with fav music in the background, to ensure I get off my sofa and keep depression at bay.
Good luck to each one of you brave recoverers , keep on moving. 🌹❤️
Recovery is different for everyone. It's a major operation and the body needs time to heal.
You're right about to keep moving, but also is important to do that in moderation. My surgeon advised a few short walks each day in the beginning.
I didn't drive for quite a while after my surgery as it was uncomfortable to get in and out of the car from that side (in the US with left THR). My husband didn't mind doing the driving. I also avoided getting on a step stool for a long time. Now at 6 months post surgery, I'm able to do a lot but continue to be careful. I have numbness in the thigh, but fortunately only time it hurts is when I walk into something on that side or my dog jumps at that side.
Different issues for all.
Best is that no more hip pain. (I was bone on bone.)
Wishing you the best during your recovery.
Good luck to you as well! 4 total hip operations? Holy cow! You are one tough trooper! I had my left hip done last September and just had my right hip done 4 weeks ago. The left hip healed so nicely with no problems at all. However, with my right hip I'm experiencing a lot of pain still in my thigh. (I've made an appointment for x-ray) I relate to your post in that with 7 years of dealing with terrible, terrible pain comes fending off depression. Missing out on so many things with my children, family and friends due to pain and immobility surely takes its toll. Quality of life was bottom of the barrel. These new hips are absolutely life changing for me!
I'm inspired by you, thank you and again, good luck to you too!
Seven hours is a lonnnnng operation, so there must have been a lot of work to do on your revision.
I will be going in for my revision next week, and have no idea how long the operation will take, it all depends on what they find when they open it up.
You say you were bone-on-metal, which sounds as bad as my shattered ceramic joint, which is now titanium stem on titanium shell, instead of ceramic head on ceramic liner. It bumps and grinds as I hobble around on crutches making horrendous noises.
Recovery can be so different between people, and between surgeries on the same person. My initial THR recovery was so different from the recovery from my first revision on the same leg just 10 weeks later.
Don't overdo it now.
Best wishes,
Graham
