8 weeks since thr

Everything was going fine I'd got back to gym at 5 weeks doing cycle and managed to get up to 30 mins. Back to work at 7 weeks and driving again. Then last weekend started getting pain in r knee after I'd been sitting down for a while. Pain eventually goes after about 10 mins when I'm walking. Before this I'd only experienced a bit stiffness after sitting but no pain. Has anyone experienced this problem. Not sure whether I should cut down on exercise or not. Any ideas?

Well pain is always a hint to pack something in! Everyone is didn't, but I have to say that you may have pushed a bit too much. Pain that starts when resting and wears off when active is often a result of tendon or nerve problems - usually something trapped. Unfortunately, where the pain is experienced isn't always an indicator of where the problem is. I'd suggest testing a bit more for a week. Stick to gentle stretches to see if that releases anything. Ice the knee. And if it doesn't improve, see the doctor. It may be very little, but if it is a trapped nerve it may need more to treat it.

I'd suggest that you're doing too much and the pain in your knee is referred from your hip. Get more rest and do gentle exercises, hopefully things will feel better and you can up the exercise. Should still take it easy though as soft tissues are still healing. 🚲

Yes - I agree with the others for what it's worth. You may not know that soft tissue doesn't all heal at the same rate.  Where muscles have been detached and re-attached to bone in the course of the operation, there is damage to tendons and potentially ligaments as well as muscle tissue, all taking varying times to heal.

i am impatient too, but think of the long term and back-pedal now! The swelling is an inflammatory response for healing, and quite natural.  Lots of people are in favour of reducing swelling with ice, I have seen on this forum, but I prefer to let is subside by itself. When it does, I then know that healing has taken place.

good luck!

Hi Susan,

You are still in the early stages of having a FHR.  Aches and pains in new areas seem to be very common until the muscles around the hip get stronger to keep the body in alignment.  You may want to tailor the exercise bike down a bit, elevate your leg whenever you can and apply ice after each workout or if hurting.

On another note, after I read about your pain occuring when sitting and then being relieved with movement, I could help but be reminded of my OA.  Moderate exercise can greatly help relieve OA pain.  If you overdo things, it can make the pain worse.  Just something to think about if your problem persists.

Take care and keep us posted
