8wks since hip replacement, sudden problem

Hi

I had a THR on the 21st June, all has been great until yesterday. I noticed a aching which seems to be coming from the hip at the front of the joint. I had also noticed when I first stand I get instant pain ( not excruciating) and it's as if the joint does not want take the weight, I can then strangely manage to walk off with just a slight reminder that it's still aching. On top of this my foot has also started swelling badly again during the dame timescale. All swelling had gone for the past month, so I am a bit concerned now.

It should take at least 6-12 weeks before you are totally pain/ache free. Tho you should mention any concerns you have with your surgeon  on your 19-12 week follow up appointment

Dear Clive

You obviously made a good recovery nut I suspect something untoward has triggered your pain

Can you recall anything you have done that may have been the cause? Did you wake up with it or did it happen during the course of the day?

Cheers Richard

It just came on whilst sitting ( observing correct position etc) it wasn't until I first got up and found the pain increase a bit, and initially when the Hip took my weight I instantly feel I have to take the strain off as it feels like it will give way. I then put load on it again, and apart from the dull pain I can then walk sometimes with a limp at first.

where as before I could walk pretty well with no pain. Worrying thing is the new swelling which suggests to me somethings not right.

thanks for the replies

Dear Clive

Thanks for explaining. Just going on my own experience I suspect you have muscle pain or muscle spasm. If I get this and I have not done something to my back then I will just use the pressure point technique and put a hot water bottle on the painful area and take a couple of paracetamol tablets if it is really bad.

If I think I've displayed my back (something I've not done for several years) I would have no hesitation in seeing my non McTimoty chiropractor to get straightened out!

Hoping that might help you.

Cheers Richard

Clive read my reply to Amanda. Yours sounds like mine too. My ankle swelled twice it's size, I forgot that was my first sign all was not right. I had no swelling after surgery so at 2 ½ months it was surprising. It was my IT band inflamed, needed 3 weeks of rest with no PT and a steroid shot. Iceing, elevation and anti-inflammatories for 3 weeks are the usual order. Good luck. Your muscles are too weak for what you've been doing. Rest, take it easy and that pain upon standing will go away. Good Luck.

Thanks Peggy, that does sound quite plausible. I had being doing quite a bit more and was moving more freely so it is quite possible I may have over done it. After having a total knee replacement on the same leg in Jan this year ( recovered very quickly) I have found it a lot harder with the Hip ( replaced 21st June)

Last week was the first time I felt steady progress, and have likely just over done things in hindsight.

Dear Clive

If you have simple pushed yourself too hard a few days of taking it steady but still doing your exercises should put you right but if not I suggest you need to investigate further. BTW are you walking in a balanced way without any sign of a limp?

Good luck. Richard

I was walking without a limp, but it has now returned, swelling is down a bit today as I have just rested. I have spinal issues which are to be dealt with now both of the joint ops have been done ( spinal instability causing stenosis) but that's another story.

I am am going to call the Arthoplasty nurse tomorrow just to be sure just for advice

Dear Clive

Sometimes life can be a real bummer can't it!

I think it would be as well to go back to two sticks or if you need more support to walk without a limp at the moment a pair of crutches.

Hope it is all a storm in a tea cup and that you are better very soon but if not.........

Cheers

Richard

hi clive,

checking in with you ... how are you doing today?

Remember that your body has recently gone through 2 major surgeries on same leg ...

Any type of major orthopedic surgery causes disruption to the rest of your body. In all likelihood, whatever your body has been doing to compensate for your knee and hip pain or malfunction has also been causing problems all on its own.

A great deal of the recovery takes place in the first two months, but complete return to normal takes longer. Bone around the metal parts keeps changing and remodeling for 1 to 2 years after surgery, which is why sometimes swelling takes place and you might feel deep aches and can tell when the weather changes.

you are doing great !!!!

big warm hug
