9 mos post op TKR and its "creaking" now

Hi all.  I am now 9 months post op.  I've gone through an MUA and i'm probably around a 110 for my bend.  I've given up caring about my bend as long as I can do daily activiities.  My replacement was my 6th surgery on this knee due to a car accident aver 25 years ago.  I'm 46 and very active.  I have finally gotten back to exercising & started back at spin (although I'm much slower than I used to be).  I've never had the clicking that others have mentioned but I have noticed a "creking" on the outer knee this week.  It doen't really hurt, it is just more irritating.  Has anyone else experienced this? I'm being careful with my exercise, and I'm hoping that this passes.  This has been a long road and I just want to get back to normal!  Also, I'm still on 2 aleve per day for pain and swelling at the end of the day since I am on my feet all day for work.  Any advice would be great!

Given that you've had 6 surgeries on that knee and that your work requires you to be on your feet all day, it is just taking longer for you to heal.  My surgeon said you can get an increase in ROM up to two years post-surgery, so I wouldn't worry.  I was told that different sounds may come from the joint, and I presume you had TKR.  In the USA I'm told with the new materials your joint can last 30 years, so it will likely last a lifetime.  How painful was the MUA and when after your surgery did they perform that?  What was your ROM at the time?  According to my surgeon, MUA is not done very often.

Hi Lynn!  I'm hoping this strange feeling goes away.  I had the MUA around 12 weeks after TKR.  I was stuck mid 80's prior to MUA.  I was SO afraid to have it done, but it wasn't that big of a deal.  I gained about 12 degrees or so from it, so it was definetly worth it.  I wish I had agreed to it earlier, but I was trying to do it on my own.  I've been so excited to be back exercising that I have slipped on my stretching, so I need to get back to that.  How far post op are you?

Hello can you tell me what MUA is

thank you

It is Manipulation under anesthesia, and it breaks the scar tissue by force. It's worth a try and does not cause potential trauma like another surgery would.  Then you will be sore again, but have the window to really work it, but use pain meds diligently so you can. PT's feel they can do this too before it gets too set, but I found it too painful.

I'm 4 weeks now.  I think I can increase ROM without the MUA, but I have to be careful not to overdo being on my feet.

I didn't realize what a long road I had ahead of me due to previous surgeries.  I'm 46 and work full time and I was thinking I'd be back to "normal" quickly...not the case!  I'm still sore and swollen at the end of the day, but I guess it is better than pre surgery.  What is your bend now?  I was 110 prior to surgery and I'm about that (maybe a little less) now.  Thankfully I'm back to regular activities and exercising.  Don't be afraid of the MUA if you need it...I wish I had done it earlier.  The week following the MUA is a little tough, but thats it.  Best of luck!

Hi Shannon95042,I'm stuck at 70%pecan get me to 75%but that's it ,PT wants doctor to pUt me on his books for manipulation so I'm calling him asap..Worried about the painful starting over yet can't live like this and go back to work standing walking on my feet all day at work.NEED RELIEF .I WILL STAY OFF WORK TILL JUNE 2017,hopefully I'll be good by then.Prayers lots of Prayers

on a good day I'm close to 90 but lately after over doing things I'm back to about 85.  One hindrance is I am anemic and do not have energy.

I was so resistant & was set on NOT having a MUA because I felt like I was starting over again, but I wish I had done it sooner!  You have to follow up with PT 4-5X week for 2 weeks.  Best of luck, I think you'll be happy you did it.  Apparently I am one of those lucky people that grow scar tissue quickly..
