9 weeks and doing well

Morning all,

Hope all my fellow pre and post op hippies are doing well. I haven't been around much, sorry, as decorated the entire upstairs while I've been off, new carpet right through and flat pack surgery to assemble so it's been all go!

I'm 9 weeks post op today and doing well, apart from a 3/4 inch leg length difference which I'm getting inserts in my shoe for. I'm pretty much pain free though, a little stiffness after sitting for a while or walking a long way but apart from that it's all been a complete success! I am pain free now, can walk the stairs like a fit person and can sleep on both sides with minimal pain. It was about 4 or 5 months last time before I could sleep properly on my side all night so I know this will improve. I'm scheduled to go back to work on November 9th on phased return so it looks like my hippie journey is almost at an end.

I want to thank all of you wonderful people on here for helping me through the dark days and celebrating with me in my little triumphs. Without you all this would have been a lonely road to travel. This isn't goodbye but obviously once back at work I will not have the opportunity to get on here as much as I have but will still be around and will post whenever I can.

Much love to you all and may your road to hippie success not always be under construction.

Morning Ali we'll done on getting to the stage where you are and what a great post it was a joy to read, I am almost 6wks post op and am doing great so far, just got to improve my walking outside , I don,t feel confident when out and about (very hilly and uneven where I live)

Sorry pressed send too early, !! Just wanted to say good luck on your return to work and for the future and hope you check in with us now and again to keep in touch. Regards Suzy x

Hi Ali

Wow you really have had a great recovery and doing amazingly well for 9 weeks post op, it gives me hope that I will soon be able to do lots more. Im nearly 2 weeks from my second (left) hip op and although I was really anxious before the op - everyone thought it would be easier having already been through it once, but it was worse in some ways as ignorance can be bliss! But I have to say after the first day post op everything has seemed much easier. I went home after 2 nights in hospital (4 last time) and have already cut down on my pain meds and even started to try a bit of walking with just one cane. After the first op I could only do so much as the other hip was still so painful.

Im so glad I found this site like you it has helped so much sharing all the highs and lows with fellow hippies who dont judge and support you with kindness and advice.

Best of luck with your phased return to work.

Hi linnet,

Its very early days for you but it sounds like you are doing well. I too was anxious for my second hip done and more difficult in some ways as I found myself comparing to first time around so convinced myself at times that I wasn't recovering well at all.

You are doing great and remember that no two surgeries are the same. I'm sure you will have an equally good outcome this time round.

Good luck 😊

Ali xx

Thank you Maggie. Your kind words are much appreciated xx

Dear Hailea. I do so hope you are doing well. I'm afraid I've fallen behind with things a little. I hope you found the strength to make a decision about your father and you have recovered from your little drug mishap.

Hope to catch up soon.

Ali xx

Dear lady. You haven't been far from my thoughts either. I'm pretty sure in 2 weeks time you will be doing just fine, hopefully even better than I am!

You have been so kind to me, amongst many others and your compassion and wisdom shines through every one of your posts. This forum would be a poorer place without people like you and I'm so pleased to say that I have become to think of you as a good friend.

Sending you best wishes for your continued good recovery and the biggest, warmest hug right back atcha for all the hugs you have sent my way.

We will keep in touch 😊

Ali , can i ask you a question, before your operation and you read what other hippies are doing could you see yourself doing it, i am three weeks to o day totally frightened out of my skin, but cannot get it out of my head, please fellow hippies tell me i am not loosing what ever marbles i have left. Sue

Hi sue,

Im not quite sure exactly what you are asking. Unfortunately for me I didn't find this forum until I was 10 days post op so had faced the early trials and problems without the wisdom and experience of these lovely people.

Can you explain why you are so scared, at 3 weeks post op? Are things going well? I'm pretty sure you would know if you weren't progressing as you should.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by could I see myself doing what other hippies were doing. Ive had some good tips from this forum on managing both physically and mentally. Why are you so scared? I'm more than happy to help you. You sound frantic, bless you.

I hope when i see the surgeon on Friday he will answer a heap of questions i am very thankful i found this site at least i know what to expect.

what i meant was i read about hippies walking so far every day, at the moment when walking feels so hard i cant imagine myself walking normally. I know i am being daft, and once its all over i will be the first to slap mysef for being so silly, fear seems to have overtaken my life for now. Thank you for your help and advice, one November 13comes i will be ok. Sue xx

dear Sue,

It is so normal to be scared at this stage ... not a great feeling, right?

Like Ali I didn't find this forum until I was in week 3 post-op of 1st THR -

so I only had "stories" from people who knew people whose neighbor's mother in law's brother had hip surgery and I should see him now ...

at that time I just wanted the pain to be gone !

No matter what anybody will tell you, it won't help, darling - so my advice is to just accept that this is how you feel ... daft, not daft, silly or not, it is what it is ...

2 weeks before my 2nd THR I freaked out so much that I needed tranquilizers !!! and I knew what to expect !!!! go figure !

Is someone coming with you to the appointment?

It is all good, Sue

big warm hug

renee

Hi Ali,

Like others here, i've been thinking about you and wondering if you are OK. Clearly, with all that decorating, you are! Great news.

I think that you are owed a big 'thank you' for all the encouragement and words of wisdom that you have offered to many other hippies, including myself. I'm now three weeks post-op (today) and making good progress. I also have a discrepancy in leg length that I want to ask surgeon about on my six week check up. Where do you get the inserts for your shoes? Is that specialist medical stuff, or more generally available?

Good luck with your return to the 'normal' world of work. I hope it goes well for you.

All best

Angela

Dear Ali great to hear you have reached such as positive stage in your recovery.  9 weeks seems like no time at all after such major surgery. You give me hope! Hope all goes well with your return to work. Best wishes Annie x

Hi Sue,

This site is great for advice and reassurance but one thing we always try to tell others is not to compare yourself to others. There are no hard and fast rules about how much you should be able to do at week 1, week 2, week 3 etc. We are all different, different ages, different sizes, different levels of fitness pre op so recovery is as individual as hair colour! If you were to constantly compare yourself to others you could drive yourself mad! You might not be able to walk as far as someone else, but your pain and swelling could be less than that person. It's swings and roundabouts my lovely 😊

Fear is natural, it's a big life changing thing that has just happened to you so don't beat yourself up about an attack of the jitters at times. When you do feel that way, come and tell us and hopefully there will be enough people to tell you that each stage, every twinge, every triumph is a normal part of recovery.

Good luck and try not to be scared. You are doing just fine!

Ali xx
