At what stage is bending down to do up shoes allowed? I have passed the 6 week mark. When can backless open sandles be worn and also heels. It's summer, do we say goodbye to 90 percent of our shoes for the immediate future?
Hello Olive you should now be allowed to bend however you may not be able to do up your shoelaces, I just managed this on week 10. Entering week 12 now and allowed to have a bath but not sure if I can get in and out so sticking to shower. Now that I can bend a bit more my muscles ache from doing different movements
Good luck with your new efforts
Hi Olive i wish you well with your new hip. I had my hip replaced on the 23/11/2011 and i still can not put my shoe or sock on
Hi. I am at week 8. I would say wear whatever is comfortable. I had quite a puffy foot until last week, so limited to what I could wear. I try to adhere to the 90degree rule, but I find that sometimes I can bend and sometimes I can't. I also found that if I sat quite low down so nearer the floor I could get to my feet. I am 5'11.
you will probably find what you can and can't do, as long as cautious and try slowly.
I found I have got flexibilty and movement in last week. Can't kneel though without some discomfort though.
Hopefully this helps and best wishes for you continued recovery.
im almost 4 weeks and put a sock on my op foot without thinking this morning. one the one hand i guess it means im healing well but on the other....ooops. im going to have be really careful now that pain and poor flexibility isnt providing a reminder. I think once you get to 6 weeks you generally are ok to start bending beyond 90 degrees providing you havent been told otherwise by your consultant. I was told absolutely NO heels until 12 weeks (i cant ever wear heels due to fused toes so its not an issue for me) but im already wearing open back flat mules in the house. I hate full shoe slippers and my feet swell badly so theyre uncomfortable.
my consultant said 6 months wait for heels - sandals no problem as long as they dont have buckles to do up as that is too much twisting - i have had a wonderful time looking for a wardrobe of funky yet suitable new shoes as someone on here pointed out that we cant wear our old ones because they are worn down to our pre op limp (my husband believed me so I went for it!!!) - for less expensive shoes I have found Matalan great and last weekend i found a fab pair of sandals in Deichman. When i went to Chichester for a weekend I discovered Shuropody who stock all the `good` makes they also have a website - happy shopping!!!
Hi Olive
Greetings...
Like Helen without thinking I put shoes and sox on at 4 weeks post op....tied shoe laces at 6 weeks which is about average it seems. Some more and some less....
As a bloke I've never worn heels!
Yes we all heal at different rates tho we do I believe need to challenge ourselvesin order to build up muscles to support walking and movement with new fab hips...
Take care and good luck

Hi Olive ... have you seen your surgeon for your post op follow up visit? he/she should tel you all restrictions are lifted or some of them at least - when did you have your surgery ? sounds like you are doing good though - just be careful not to overdo it - there is still healing going on ... take care
Hi Olive,
I'm in my third week post op and was able to put the sock on in week two. This week I managed to tie the laces for a pair of All Stars, work shoes there's no way still as they tie lower. Open heeled slippers I've been wearing all along, since it's quite hard finding closed ones being a shoe size 12...
For me it's a case of taking a movement slow, if there's any strain other than muscles protesting a little, I don't go there. One thing I don't want is having the lot dislodge somehow...
We're all different, it's a case of finding what works well I'm afraid. And when in doubt, talk to your PT, have them practice with you to see what's possible.
Hi, I'm almost 6 months post op and still can't put my socks on or tie shoe laces! Darent get in a bath either as I would struggle to get out. I think my difficulty stems from my right hip needing replacing though. Perhaps if it had been ok, I would have been able to tie my shoe laces etc.I don't know if anyone else suffers with a painful coccyx. I do after sitting for a while and I never did before my hip replacement. But yes my new left hip is doing well, its just difficulties arising from my right hip now.
Dear Shirley
Sorry to hear this.
Sounds much slower than normal so see you GP and physio soon. You need those muscles working hard after being cut in surgery so it's a vicious circle . Wonder if you are doing g your daily exercises too?

Have you had your surgeon meet yet? It's a good question - I'll make a note for my meet next week. I thought the surgeon told you if you could break the rule.
suspenct it is your other hip being the problem. I am 3 months post op - can do up shoes on the operated side, but not the side that needs doing. For me it is the twist on the leg causing a problem!
Thanks guys, very helpful advice about bending down. However..... how do you bend down?. Putting a sock on the operated leg, do you bend down to the ground, flex your knee and leg up in front of you, or behind you. I saw the surgeon at 2 weeks, too early to ask and am due to see him again in another 4 weeks. I am 7 weeks post op today. All is going well, walking without sticks, sleeping on my operated leg side, working on my walking without hitching my hip... getting there bit by bit.
Nobody on the professional side has said anything about carrying weight, however a friend nearly had a fit, when she saw me carrying a tray full of cups and goodies to eat!. It never entered my mind tit could be a problem. After all, you're not going to get a hernia!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a nice day y'all....
Hi again,
someone on this site recommended sitting and leaning forward at 4 weeks to tie shoe laces
and
standing up to put on jeans and shoe laces at 6-7 weeks
good plan?

That would be a good plan Mic but for me, my leg is still swollen and stiff and am unable to bend my leg up enough to tie shoes, or bend over enuf.. hope to finally start physio this week
i dont think carrying a tray will do your hip any harm :D
Im not supposed to bend beyond 90 until i see the surgeon at 6 weeks (2 weeks from now) so need to behave really. just because i can doesnt mean i should. I think as you are beyond the 6 week mark Olive you will be ok to start working on flexibility that way. Just dont push beyond whats comfortable. after your exercises while youre warmed up would be the best time.
Hi Dawn,
good luck with the physio -hope you get someone who understands where you are at.
Phones, if you upgraded to a samsung Galaxy 5 you'd get a FREE S Health app, which would measure your daily steps and give you stars!

It is me again ... I am 11 weeks post op and 90* is lifted - however .... I still use the grabber to pick up flat things off the floor and also the sock aid to put on socks - but then, my other hip is giving me grieve and needs THR as well - didn;t see that coming .... oh well ... I haven't heard about not carrying a tray - hey, if you can carry it without dropping anything, why not ... have a great night ...
I wouldn't be able to do my laces by leaning forward as I would break the 90degree rule. So at 5 wks i'm still relying on my partnerand any visitors! Or if I'm desperate I put on some mocassin shoes but they have a higher heel..
