Attended a group physio session and sat next to a lady who was 5 weeks post op. She was telling me her hip had dislocated 3 times.
15 minutes in to the session it happened again as she lent forward to move her bag. The other times she had been pulling the backs of her shoes up and picking her bag up from the floor.
A warning to us all to remember the rule. For what ever reason it seems this lady was unable to dispite the obvious pain she was in when the medics tried to move her.
Next time I forget I've had a THR I will remember this.
That is a good rule to remember. I have had bilateral revision recently and that is a major major issue it could cause dislocation. Not crossing the body center line or crossing legs. Also remembering many of these rules can also help, the THR last longer.
i have one that is 19 years old. It's lasted tru a lot of living and glad to have had it done at a younger age. I had my mobility back. Two months later went to Disney. Sat to rest watched the rides no rwisting low seating all the rules. But had a great time at Epcot. Totally forgot I had THR. Great distraction.
Thanks Chrizzy! So true. I had my first rhr July 18. 3 weeks later I go to dr for follow up and find out I dislocated it. Had been like that for at least a week if not longer. Dr tried to do a closed reduction but had to open me up again to find the head was caught up behind cup, cup & stem were loose, wound up having a total hip revision. 6 weeks non weight bearing, no hip flexion past 80 degrees & no hip exercises. Was the worst thing ever. I'm now a little over 7 months in. Still limping, nerve pain that can be so bothersome that I don't know what to wear anymore. Sheets bother my thigh. I'm hoping that this gel dr prescribed along with taking gabapentin will help me cope. To this day I'm still not sure how or when I dislocated it. Sorry to be so negative but most days I'm suffering and struggle to cope with this so called "life" of mine. But I have to take it one day at a time. Wishing you all the best. Linda
Sorry to hear that Linda. It can be quite painful.
you have been theu a lot. Revision is a bit more difficult to get thru .
i hope that you will,be back on track soon. I had revision last Jan due to implant failure. Keep walking that's the key. Stretches some exercises don't over do. Every day you you will get a little better. It takes time for the bone to grow and secure the implants.
90 degree don't tilt foot inward and don't cross midline and bending is tough always use a reacher. In a few more months time you will have a better function from the THR revision.
Your ur absolutely right take it one day at a time! 😊
Interesting. Because the latest advice and research shows that the rule had no reliance these days. My physio told me (and the surgeon confirmed) that these days there is no correlation between the 90 degrees and dislocation, and that provided bending was approached with care (add in, don't try rapid movements or gymnastics!) and caused no pain ( so bend slowly and stop as soon as there is any pain), it was fine. Apparently the rule is something like 50 years old and the technology and methods used today are very different. Modern research on outcomes now says that dislocation, unless caused by inadequate surgery, is what it is - just bad luck and can be caused by a whole variety of things nothing to do with bending.
Certainly, I followed the advice I was given and have been bending throughout without any problems. And I'm not the only one. I think that often the advice has been around for so long that people forget why they are giving it.
I had my FHR done last year in South Carolina (US). I was given the 90 degree rule for the first 12 weeks. After that, I was told there were no limitations. I do gentle stretches daily which helps. I had my right hip done. I can rest my right ankle on top of my left knee (while sitting in a chair) and gently lower the right knee down to the height of that ankle. Similar to a yoga position. As with any stretches, you should take it slow and easy at first. Your body will tell you when to stop before any injury if you listen to it.
Oh I know Hope. I can bend to get things off floor as dr showed me. Kick operated leg back. But the tightness and the pain of the thigh is what's a killer 😖 Yea I need to walk more. But that feels a little strange too. Hard to describe. But it's SLOWLY getting better. It's just that I wasn't expecting this at all. I feel like I traded one pain for another. The nerve pain has gotten worse. Not sure if it's because I'm doing more exercises or what. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying but sometimes I just don't feel like doing it anymore. Hugs 🤗. Linda
I just don't know Kim......I still don't know how my hip dislocated. I was like that for at least a week if not longer. But with me I can't get to 90 yet. I'm so tight and stiff. And after what I went through I'm scared as hell of another dislocation. And to be honest I envy you folks who can do stuff as you mentioned walking up stairs, biking getting back to a better life. Sorry to rant but it's hard for me. I think I would of been better off not doing this surgery. Makes me wonder. 😞
Sorry to hear about all your struggles Linda. What have the doctor's suggested?
Oh dear Linda you have been through the mill! Swopping one pain for another ust be do demoralizing. Don't see your comments as negative, you are just venting your feelings and there's no better place than here as you will no doubt get help and encouragement from others who have experienced similar difficulties.
Lets hope that time, medication, exercise and good advice can help you on the way to mending.
Thinking of you chrizzy x
Hi,
It's always something and a lot of pain getting tru THR and revision as well as getting back mobility and a better quality of life. Revision takes more time.
In my case the femur bone had a fracture in the greater tochanter top section of the femur. Didn't show up on xrays or MRI's for 5 years.also have a cable implant holding the new 13" revision femur implant to hold the fracture in place to the bone. Same type of cable on my grape vines LOL .
Also had a hip implant that was recalled just a few months after implant for metal on metal .
I expierienced cobalt fretting into tissue and swollen lymph nodes pseudo tumors and fracture was finally found during revision explaining the pain for 5 years still used a cane.
Long story short I went into rehab 2 days after revision last Jan for 10 days. Had PT every day 3 times a day & walked every time I was given my pain meds. I had muscle and tendon pain , numbness and both feet swollen so much I wore my huby slippers. Mens size 11.pain at one point was so severe they called a ambulance pain meds but IV and pills did not help the pain. I just plugged they it waited a few days only rested and it was so much better then continues with PT.
i came home and used a pressure boot to help calves and theigh pain. From Amazon.
it is a slow process to healing. The bone takes time thru blood flow & oxygen to grow new bone and secure the implants. Everone is different. Every circumstance is different depending on the level of OA damage and state of the bone and tissue.
After coming home I just rested and did what I could. Never pushishing.
Today I was out playing frisbee with my border collie. She is so funny. Laughter really is the best medicine and keeps me moving .
Baby steps daily . It will all come together after a few months you will be up and walking like a pro. I know you are strong and determined to get past the elements of struggling thru hip pain until your back helping others on this forum.
It's a ll those ups and downs and you have said so many times before." the roller coaster ride", never stops. 8-10 months you'll be putting on your dancing shoes .👠👠
Healing wishes sent your way! 😊
Thank you so much Hope. I too have 2 cables on my thigh bone after revision cause had small fractures so dr put two to secure stem. Said I wouldn't feel them 🤔 U have been through so much more than I. I admire your positive attitude. It helps when someone like me feels so very discouraged. Some days I don't want to get out of bed, but I push myself to. Hugs and blessings. Linda
Give it time. I'm from Texas. Am taking gabapentin and de just prescribed votaren gel for the nerve pain. Will shall see how that works. Wishing you all the best. Linda
Thank you 😊. It's just today I'm in a mood...... usually I try to stay positive but after the last couple of days I'm just tired. No more sugar coating what I'm feeling. It can be all so overwhelming. And yes this forum has been very helpful and tolerant of me! Lol 😂
Did they do a osteomy to cut the bone to remove the expla nt in the femur?
That is usually two cuts with special interments. Then requires two cables and cable brackets.
i will have my cable removed in 6 months once fracture has healed.
It does you good to vent your feelings but difficult to do to friends and family especially if they have not travelled the road of continual pain. It wears you down physically and mentally so takes those naps when you need them, they are healing. :- xxx
That's interesting to read Beth. No doubt the medics need to refresh their advice x
No the stem was loose when he went in the second time around. The two bands he put around the femor where to help with new stem as there were more like stress fractures so to keep in place and aide in keeping from further fractures was to get this bands around femur and keeping me non weight bearing for 6 weeks. Those are in there for life.
No Hope dr didn't have to do that. The stem was loose when he went in the second time. He saw stress fractures so decided to put 2 bands around femur once he put new stem in to help secure it. Mine are never coming out.
Ok same thing that happen to me from metal on ,teal implant causing the stem to break and loosen the femur implant.
Were your fractures found before surgery ?
