Abnormal lft & fat malabsorption?

My 2 year old had a parasite which migrated to her bilary tract. We appear to have gotten rid of the parasite however we are still experiencing problems.

Pale poops, sometimes yellow greasy poops, they absolutely stink & are very bulky in size. When she does use the toilet there is a massive oily film on top of the water. Our gastroenterologist said she could now have problems with her bilary tract which is causing fat malabsorption. He tested her for celiacs (just to be on the safe side), and also did a lft.

We had a phone call from our local hospital to say her lft has came back abnormal and her gastroenterologist wants more tests. Lft, coagulation, vit a, e & d. These are being done tomorrow.

I know many won't have problems due to a parasite but what about fat malabsorption? How does an abnormal lft & fat malabsorption come hand in hand? Also what do they also need the coagulation & vitamin blood tests doing? We aren't due to see the gastroenterologist till end of July so any input would be fantastic. Thank you.

Your symptoms (not actually yours) are those of malabsorbtion of fat. Look up Steatorrhea.

Vit tests will be to try/help and diagnose the cause. LFTs can consist of so many more than the standard ones a normal GP does and are to try and diagnose the exact cause. Coagulation, which is vit k/platelets also is another part of LFT tests.

They probably have some ideas on the problem, but need to do these tests to narrow it down/confirm it. I'm afraid you are just going to have to wait.

Thank you for getting back to me. I managed to have a little read of the letter the gastroenterologist sent over to our paediatrician, it just looks like he suspects it's a short term problem relating to the parasite she had and is hoping it should resolve itself by our next appointment, however if we get another abnormal result then they will bring our appointment forward to discuss a plan of action so only time will tell.
