Achilles rupture not healing very quickly anyone else had this?

I'm 4.5 weeks into my recovery and finally had a scan last Friday and got the results yesterday. I would of thought at this stage things would be healing, but  my scan showed that it was a full rupture and my tendons aren't even connected yet!!! I have a blood clot between the two ends of the tendon. I'm feeling so gutted!!!! The 1st specialist I saw said that at 3.5 weeks I could go into a moonboot with 3 wedges and a wedge removed every week....... When I went back to see him at 3.5 weeks I saw a different specialist and he said I could go into the moonboot but don't need wedges (heel raisers) so he put my foot flat down!! I didn't feel good about this as I had a burning feeling so ended up asking my physio for advice and he immediately placed wedges in my boot and sent me for a scan. I cannot believe the difference in advice I have been given and not to mention NO Scan till after a month!!! Surgery was never offered, rather I was told that I'd be best without surgery (how on earth did they know that without a scan baffles me!) Anyway sorry for the rant, but anyone else out there healed like me (SLOW)

Di you had full or partial rupture? I had a partial rupture and on had ultra sound when i hadinjury straight   away. Then 6 weeks in the cast and last Monday i started walking with normal shoes but i am using running shoes as the are comfortable . I have started exercises and its getting better as last monday i couldn't stand on the injured   leg but now i can. But still AT is stiff and calf is week.

About consultants they are ridiculous every one give a different opinion .

Mine was a full rupture but only just found this out. As no scan until Friday just gone. You have had a real quick recovery, so wanted this to be the same for me but doesn't look like lucks on my side sad

I agree with Imran. Everyone seems to have diferent advice. I am still 9 weeks later in my airboot with one heel lift to go. Next week off to docs again with my last of the four heel lifts to come out, then in assume I will be in my airboot with a flat foot. I have never heard of anyone having an airboot without heel lifts so early on or not having the option of surgery. I had my ultra sound 9 days after my rupture and want to push for another one to see the progression.

Change your doctor or ask to be seen by the original doc who gave you the heel lifts. I have jet to see a physio and can't wait to get started.

good luckNess

Hi Imran,

glad things are moving forward for you, lucky you. Back to docs next week  with last heel lift to be removed. I hate started doing my own exercises with boot on and off no pain! Just want to get better quickly like you.

a friend of mine recently RAT In the same town and she had different advice again (private) and is still in her trainers finds it easier his is the route I will take when I get to no boot.

omg Ness that's terrible, are they going to do anything about the blood clot???

I can't believe that the doctor put you in a boot without any heel raisers after such a short time.

Did they say how long they think before the tendons start to connect.???

It is such a slow horrible process isnt it, i really feel for you as it happened to us both on the same day, I am just wondering when will i be able to at least weight bear even a little, my last plaster cast is not due off until around the 4th September, then what ?? will i be able to walk even a little then.... anyone know what happens after the final cast/ boot comes off.??

Mandy x

Not at that stage yet Mandy but nearly there. I have one more week left until my last Hel lift comes out and then assume I will still be in my boot for a few weeks? It will be 9.5 weeks that I have worn this bloody boot and well and truly happy to throw the thing in the bin although I am sure I might get some money on eBay? Can let you know what happens next week but everyone has different advice and experiences as you can see.

Hi Karen, i bet you can't wait the get the boot off!! are you in the UK.

It is very frustrating with everyone getting different advise and treatment. I am supposed to be going on holiday on the 20th September and my last cast comes off on the 4th September , have no idea how mobile i will be then.

Mandy x

Yes in UK Kent. Never went into a cast only ever been in Airboot and have already had to cancel a holiday in July. I am in desperate need and so are my family of a holiday and hoping to squeeze one in in August if this boot ever comes off!

where do you live?

Hi Karen, yes I have now requested to see the original specialist privately rather than the public health system we have here, this way I will only see him. Physio won't touch me yet till healed, but just went to him for advice. Are you weight bearer at all yet?

Hi Karen

Also in the UK .. in Surrey very close to Gatwick Airport.

Are you being treted on the NHS ?

Mandy x

Yeah will be a while yet Mandy before you can bear weight on it. Karen do you sleep with your boot on? Do you take it off to shower? I sleep with mine (well not according to specialist no 2!!)  I struggle with sore hips in the night and then when it comes to showery I'm real nervous when I take it off I'm so scared that I'll hurt it! (I Hv a shower stool but still nervous)

Hi Ness- so sorry to hear that! Hopefully you'll get better treatment if you're going back to the original doctor. Were you on blood thinners at all for clots? I am taking Xarelto for DVT, although almost finished, then will take half an aspirin a day.

It's so discouraging to find that out after all that time. I am 4 weeks post-surgery for a full rupture, although don't go back to be checked for another 4 weeks. I am in a boot that I take down the incline (bit like a heal lift) each week, until flat.

I can't believe you hadn't had a scan until now. Sounds madness! I actually had my scan late ... Waited about 2 weeks as I just thought I had twisted my ankle... Never imagined it would be so serious. I totally know how you feel about the wasted time!

Take care!

Yes good old NHS although to be honest hasn't had a bad experience but I've been a good patient and not really bothered them much just got on with my own thing although some conflict in the beginning about offering surgery without scan but I pushed it and thank god I did as I didn't have full tear so opted non surgery. Not far from agar wick myself in Tunbridge Wells

I am shocked that why they didn't do your U/S when it happened!! Are you taking injections?

I had been told to start weight-bearing at 2 weeks post-surgery, as long as I'm in the boot. I can't walk obviously as I have the incline and need crutches but have started to put my foot down and put a bit of weight on. Anyone else putting a bit of weight on so early?

I know what you mean about the shower! So difficult - and I use a stool! Also sleep in the boot.

Heap slept with this alien baby for 9 weeks, kicked my husband a few times (don't have a spare bed). I take off for showering and got my husband to help whilst I shimm'd along the bath ( our shower is over the bath) and he stood there whilst I showered. I have now managed to have a shower on my own and sit I the bath to get my legs over and have enough strength to pull myself up and get out. This is because I now put my injured foot down and steady myself not full weight on it but hopeful I am getting there. I was really nervous to begin with and didn't want to shower but it gets better you need to be brave but confident. When out of the shower I rest my foot on he bed and do exercises buzz only been doing this for 3 week so also to let air to my foot

I have started putting weight in my 4th week as i thought if i dont feel pain its better to do it now as it will help in the progress towards recoverysmile

Yes ... It's a long road to recovery isn't it! How are you doing with your cast off now?

I am doing great!! I can stand on injured leg - swelling is going down- limp is getting better- yesterday, i was on my feet for 1hr 30 mins cleaned the out side from the house . Doing 20 mins exceriese bike - doing all this because more you will do ,your affected   muscles will get strong . But at the same time, dont over do!!
