Hi, welcome to this forum. Here is the few medication that can help your child; Methylphenidate, Dextroamphetamine-amphetamine, Dextroamphetamine etc. I am not a doctor so consult to your doctor and try to find out regarding these medicines.
hi thanks for your reply .
i have looked into these meds but at the moment will not be medicating my son . the side affects are not good and give symptoms similar to the anxiety issues he had last year , theres no way i can put him through that again !
Hi, I should have been diagnosed with AD/HD when I was 4, but unfortunately, the doctors chose the wrong disease and picked something extremely similar, Petit Mal Epilepsy - that has a different name these days Absences -
So I just thought I'd point that out - as they got me wrong they might have other children wrong too?
I find methylphenidate to be an excellent medication, it works perfectly. I can't live without it, happily.
hiya i'm new to this but i would love to chat ?

Hi I have ADHD- combined type.
One of the people here has ADHD, 23 year old woman.
I am SEVERE ADHD, probably your son isn't as err bad as me.
But serious I was not medicated as a child.
By the time I was a teenager, well I was so out of control your jaw would probably drop to the ground. I won't tell you how crazy things got, I think it would upset you.
If you have not tried medication?
Could you please explain more about the anxiety issues your son had?
I know quite a fair bit about ADHD, and a lot about many medications.
Hi. My 9 year old has just been diagnosed. I was told there's no severve or mild adhd. U just either have it or you dont. I'm waiting to meet with the specialist. Psychologist. Paediatrician. And gp to discuss meds and help in school. I'm scared and Hate the thought of giving meds to him everyday. But I know he needs help so he can do as well as he can academically.
He is impulsive. Angry. Loving. Helpful. Argumentative. And just finds it so hard to concentrate and stay on task. The only thing he puts his all into is video games!!
hi sleepymum i no what you mean there is a lot to take in when your child first gets diagnosed ,when i was at that stage first i thought im glad someone believes me and then was it something i did what sld i do now. meds or no meds... if you want to chat drop me a msg thanks care
Hi. I don't feel as though someone finally believes me really. It's more like why couldn't we help him earlier on. I dont want him to feel d8fferent to others. And tell people he has meds for his condition.
hi sleepymumof2
your lad sounds similar to mine - yep they can concentrate for hours on end on things that capture them things that really interest him x
life will get easier - you learn to cope better - I have explained to my son that yes he is a bit different but then we are all different and life would be pretty boring if we were all the same . I haven't gone down the traditional meds route with my child at the moment - we have used homeopathic remedies which have helped - especially with anxiety etc..
a good book to read with your child is all dogs have adhd - it explains things in a fun way - you can get it in the library - its a light hearted book my child enjoyed it .I too was told you either have it or not - but I know personally that it can be worse for some than others - but that's the same with everything I suppose x
Michael - I work with kids / adults with all kinds of learning difficulties/behavioural problems /disabilities etc.... so nope it wont shock me - but it is one of the reasons we are not medicating at the moment, as I have seen both the positive and negative sides of meds - however if my child comes to me and asks for traditional meds then that is a path we will consider but at the moment my child does not want this either. anxiety has come from bereavement of close family members
Kerry - hows things going ? were ok at the moment - thankfully !
hiya yeah all good here glad your all ok drop me a msg if you want to chat x
if you worried about him feeling different what i tell my son is your on medication to help you to concentrate i always say to him this meds is not to make you be a good boy only you can make that choice but its to help you. i say to him its a bit like someone who is short sited they wear glasses and then they can see like everyone else you take meds and then your like everyone else .if you talk to him i bet you will find he feels different from other children anyway i hope my spelling is ok im dyslexia take care all x
I understand that the individual situation must be taken into account, but if a child is significantly failing to function at the level indicated by their general intelligence, and suffering direct negative consequences, medication probably is well worth considering.
I still mix up various printed and small and capital letters. Why? Wasn't paying adequate attention in primary school. My cursive has significant flaws also, lapses in attention.
Despite having advance computer programming skills, it was not until I was around 13, that I finally learned the entire alphabet.
Going out of control as an adolescent, and without any assistant medications, I very nearly ended up dead. I also spiraled out of control in dangerous aggressive and criminal directions, and it was just luck really that kept me out of prison or big trouble.
Of course I dropped out of school entirely at age 13- never to return, and started pot around 14, and was a daily smoker by 15- for various years.
I can remember in year 8, just being distracted by my own thoughts and missing critical instructions and being the only person in the entire class unable to complete the lesson's project.
My father would scream at me abuse each day because I was not living up to his expectations, was always hopeless unreliable, disorganized and basically incompetent. eventually I snapped, destroyed his car entirely (all the windows and lights, various dents), smashed about 20 holes in the walls in the house, broke most windows, and attacked him with an axe. That was the last time I lived at home. I feel at 13 I got close to not only suicide but also killing my father.
It has taken me DECADES to get on track.
well done for sharing and getting back on track
Hi everyone, I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. I am in matric now and actully discoverd it myself. I went to the doctor and he said I was right and always had it, but because of my high intelect I managed to hide it for 11 years. I am on the meds now and it is going a little better, my consentration is more stabel but I have one problem, time. See there are rules that the school must follow when dealing with adhd kids. The one I am focusing on is that you are allowed to recieve an extra 10-15 minutes on every hour you are writing exams. I sent in my request and got denied because I had no childhood history of this and also the option for extra time already closed in April.... I am a little shocked by this but would have accepted their denial had I not seen that there are so many cases where people are denied for the very same reason. I believe that it is unfair because, like in my case, it was a late diagnose which nobody could have done anything about. If anyone can give me some ideas on what I can do or whom I can speak with please let me know. Also if you have a kid with the slightest symptoms of adhd make sure you get him/her and if he/she indeed have it, insure that the option for extra time stays open, even if he/she doesn't need it. For it is a terrible shame if a kid can't reach his/her full potential.
Hello. I am glad this question is posted. I have a 19 year old that has ADHD and Dyslexia. He has tried therapy, not a fan, and tried medication, but the medication makes him very depressed. He was supose to start college, but then backed out at the last minute. He is looking for a job and I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to help him turn into a productive and happy adult. Any suggestions would be great.
