I had a full ceramic hip replacement a year ago, the pain has got gradually worse, some days my hips locks and the pain and spasms are so bad I have passed out and nearly had to call an ambulance as I get stuck in one position. I cannot stand for very long and cannot walk without a stick. I am a 47 year old female - I have had to give up work and becoming more and more house bound, I feel I have lost the life I had. I have just had a CT scan to see what is going on and going for the results on 8th Jan - I am seeking a second opinion regarding what has happened as not happy at all. It has taken so many oppointments to get this far and I have now had enough - I am starting to think something has definitley gone wrong - Does anyone have any advice on how I get a second opinion please?
If you're in UK, just contact your consultant and request one.
Helen please keep me inform of your situation....I need a THR, Thank you
Will do x
Didn't really want to go through my current consultant, is that the only way of doing it? xxx
good luck helen, I think I should hold off on my THR untill I cant take it any more, due to the fact that things can still go wrong. what do you think? Thank you.
Just ask your GP for an appointment with another surgeon for second opinion. Start the ball rolling before you see your original surgeon so you don't have to wait so long. If you have BUPA insurance or any other you would be seen earlier. It is not right what is happening to you. Losing your job and independence at your age is not an option.....might even be worth paying privately to see someone.
Hi Helen, Im so sorry your having problems , I had thr revision last year I also have problems mine is i have nerve damage . You should get second opinion Im wish you the best. please let us know how you are doing .
Thank You
Jackie
That's understandable, although the vast majority of surgeons are fine with it, since it is your right.
If you're in the UK, there's a service called PALS (Patients' Advice & Liaison Service), which should be attached to every hospital.
I'm sure they'd be happy to advise you on an alternative way.
Elaine
It sounds like your prosthetic(implant) could be defective. The manufacturer and serial # should be in your medical records if you don't have that info. While you're waiting for your second opinion appointment, you may want to research your prosthetic to see if it has been recalled.
Good luck,
Kathee
jimmy dont be put off by the things that go wrong although there are risks...just read the many of us that have 1000% success...if you are in pain then there is no need to suffer....I;m 63 and have now the movement of 20 years ago!!! I'd advise anyone to go for it..life's too short!!!
You have to wait until January 8 for the MRI results? That seems cruel. Can't you get an idea whether or not they found something? If you have a significant issue, chances are you need to be seen right away. I would be going crazy wondering if my problems were connective, soft-tissue related or with the prothesis! If your device has dislocated, I would think it totally irresponsible for someone to make you wait and suffer so long to hear the results. Good luck, and sorry to hear you are having such problems.
Hi Helen, my THR was sept 2013 I'm waiting a revision. Although my consultant said my cup was loose I took it upon myself to visit a skeletal expert in Harrogate. My femur head was not sitting correctly in the cup, he manoeuvred it and although I'm not 100% I can control my pain with just paracetamol and can walk further than I have in the last year. I'm still awaiting a revision, I know we're all different but from X-rays etc this was not picked up, please try other avenues before giving up, my chap cost me £30 and has given me more hope and answers than the nhs. I've no idea re bupa I didn't have insurance. Please keep us informed. Try have a happy new year. Ps can give you the number for my chappie if you're not too far away. X
Thanks Elaine x
I will say Jimmy - I have spoken to so many people who have had really successful THR, I think mine has been unusual and unfortunate which is why I think something has gone wrong. I was on a ward with 3 other ladies that had exactly the same op and they were walking about 3 days later albeit with the aid of a stick - apart from the pain from the wound they said it felt fantastic. If you are really suffering at the moment it could be the best thing for you x
Thank you Carol, I have made an appointment with my GP so hoping that will get things moving - (me as well hopefully!!!) xx
Thanks for your reply Jackie, how does the nerve damage effect you? - wondering if that is what is going on with me. I have a permanent limp which I never had before but when I stand for more than 5 mins or walk anywhere without my crutch I can't sit back down as the pain is beyond belief far worse than anything I had before. x
Thank you Kathee, that sounds like a good idea, I will try that x
Good job! Your doctors only want a good outcome for their patients so what you have is unusual and needs to have attention sooner than later so that you have a good outcome and quality of life. Be well, stay positive it's the only way forward! Xx
Thank you for your response Hermionie, they did do an xray about 3 weeks ago, the xray just showed that the hip replacement did look a little high and that there was some shadowing above the cup which is why they have done the scan. I have been going back and forth for the last year, they have just kept saying everything looks ok and I have to give it time. I have now given it a year or rather lost another year of my life so am now getting more firm with the new consultant I have. xx
