advice on herbal supplemnt for depression

have depression for over 6 years ,lexapro worked for 5 ,tried venlefaxine ,got worse tried seroxat not working ,just looking for information ,on Rhodiola has anyone tried this . looking for other options thanks

Mary

Consider what you wish to try, sad we are told what we need Mary, our decisions and gut instinct are far down the list of our researches.

Try NHS CHOICES they have a full list of medication you can research.

It sometimes they say O I would love that Rolls Royce, Yes we will give you a mini instead

Good Luck on your research, let me know how you get on.

BOB

Hi Bob thanks for this, I think i'll go with my instinct  ,at least I laughed at this humerus reply best wishes

Mary

I have researched this for myself and found that St. Johns Wort is the best...I haven't tried it thou because I think it works like other SSRI antidepressents and I can't take those.

Maybe it will work for you.

Hi Missy thank you for the reply,I am getting afraid of trying new meds this is why I am looking for other ways ofto treat this depression .Thanks

Mary

That is EXACTLY why I decided to try herbs because I was "afraid"...but I found out...do not underestimate the herbs....they do have side effects as well...and even worse...they are not regulated by the FDA so the ingredients have not even been approved for "safety".

When something has the FDA seal...it is certified to be

Safe and Effective

OH ,that would be a worry ,thank you for letting me know ,its good to get information on this .hope you are keeping well thanks for helping on my journey ,we all need it

I am currently not taking any herbs either because they are scary too.

I do drink Chamomile tea occassionally for night time anxiety and it seems to soothe me sometimes.

Honestly, thou your Dr. should prescribe something for your symptoms...because i have found out it is probably safer.

My doctor   prescribed  venlefaxine got worse on that at the moment on seroxat ,3 weeks now not feeling the best ,will give it a month just dont feel myself  ,lexapro worked for 5 years but went back into depression 3 months ago frightened , dont like all of this switing from one to another,

I searched about herbs not approved you were right,i;ll stick with the doctor .thanks Missy

With Seroxat give it five weeks

BOB

You need to be careful with the herbs they can have a nasty effect when taken with standard AD MEDICATIONS

BOB

Hi Bob thank you ,and yes I will do that ,the help is a great support

many many thanks

mary thanks uou know where we are

BOB

I know border..I figured out how dangerous the hard way.

I took some 5HTP with some medication that also produced Seratonin.  I had a severe reaction..throwing up...pounding headache....and basically poisoned myself.  I'm kind of afraid of them now.

But, I always google drug interactions before I take anything new...even prescriptions..because a prescription was prescribed to me....that shouldn't have been and the pharmacist called the Dr. that prescribed it...but the Dr. kept me on it...so that medication ALONE was mixing poorly with other medications and the Dr. slipped and didn't remember to warn me.

THEN I took the 5Htp which exasperated everything.

So..I do know.

LOL..glad you didn't have to learn the hard way as I did.

Probably just change depression med.  I have changed to Wellbutrin (Zyban in UK).  and I like it.

Hi Mary,

You have been given good advice from forum members.. I have thought of going the "natural" way but couldn't get enough information. I did learn tho' that mixing mh. medication and homeopathic/herbs/ etc. is not a good idea.

I thought about accupuncture,

even bought crystals....quite pretty but no success.wink

It is so difficult to find a med. that suits you and works, isn't it?

I hope that you are coping,

take care

Sxxi

Hello Sxx thank you for this reply its a great help to me .Yes it is hard

and I am afraid of meds ,the people on this forum are fantastic and very helpful ,very greatful .and alway's there to talk to.Iam going to stay with the doctor as I could make it worse, dont know about acupunture ,I am sure that someone might help with advive on that on this forum. Not as depressed as a few weeks ago thanks ,Best wishes and take care

Mary

Hi Mary,

I am "afraid" of meds. too. I have been on and off ad's for 14 years. The last 4 years tried so many different ones. Have made a decision to give the one I am on now at least three months to give it chance to really work. Give my poor brain a bit of a rest, with one pill instead of chopping and changing. Patience and willpower are what I need.

I hope you have people to help and support you and that you have a good doctor who you can talk to.

drink lots of water, eat well and healthy, rest when you feel the need and try to get some exercise. I expect you know all this but sometimes it helps to hear it again...

take care

Sxx

Pleasse let me know how you get on some time .
