advice please my 14y/o has been dx with anxiety

She was started on Lexapro in February she has been been complaining of hearing voices sometimes the voices tell her to harm herself the psychiatrist states that it's just the anxiety and it's ok just to watch her I've been reading about anxiety haven't read anything about hearing voices anyone with advice or more information? ?

Hi Sommer,

I'm very sorry to hear your daughter is going through this difficult time. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression and never once heard voices. Now this is me and can only speak for myself, but there might under lying causes that her doctor is not seeing or the medication can be causing this. I would continue to inquire more info from research and her doctor. I hope this helps. You and your daughter snre in my thoughts and prays.

My daughter has Autism, Bipolar, and paranoia. Her Psychiatrist askes her regularly if she hears voices. That is a sign of Schizophrenia, whis is not usually diagnosed until they are about 19, unfortunately. She does not hear voices, but paranoia is a form of schizzophrenia. Her medicine helps her to keep at an even keel, as she was having major mood swings. My daughter also used to cut herself. I would express all things to the psychiatrist, and if she still says only anxiety, maybe time to find another. Most people with anxiety are terrified of dying, so would not try to harm themselves. I hope this has helped some and your daughter gets better. I know how stressful it is for a mom!

Thank you

Hi sommer....

Hearing voices isnt normally a sign of Anxiety...Your daughters psychiatrist sounds terrible..maybe you could ask to see another. Just a thought and may not be the case but a rare side effects of SSRIs including Lexapro can be hallucinations so it might be the tablets. I am surprised that the phychatrist has not mentioned it.
