My girlfriend was diagnosed with graves disease 8 yrs ago. From what i know she started out taking pills but stopped taking them after couple weeks. I have noticed alot of changes mentally anxiety etc. I think she assume the worst meaning surgery. How can I explain to her properly that treatment is necessary without scaring her I'm afraid I'm going to lose her if something isn't done asap. Help me help her please!
Graves disease serious ilness you can not stop your antithyroid medication ! I was diagnosed Graves' disease 2008 ...
Hi todd81825, I am a bit confused regarding the timeline. You say your girlfriend was diagnosed with Graves' disease 8 years ago. Was it then that she discontinued treatment or did she have a relapse and was supposed to take her medication recently?
I think it would be good to find out why she is reluctant to continue with her treatment. Do you happen to know if she is taking anti-thyroid drugs at the moment (and the daily dose)?
I don't want to alarm you but untreated Graves' disease may lead to severe thyrotoxicosis and in the worst case a dangerous condition called thyroid crisis (which requires urgent medical attention).

Hello. I also stopped my meds for 2 years. I became very weak. Didn't have the strength to lift things. My kids had to lift things for me. I couldn't walk very far either. I was outta breath. My whole body shook. Nausea, abdominal pain. I thought I was going to die. I started my methimazole on the 1st and I did a 100 percent turn around. If you don't take your meds you will get bad over time. It happened to me. I was so sick. Hope all goes well!
