you are not always contagious.
you never can tell when you are shedding.
on average hsv1 genitally sheds 5% of days were as hsv2 genitally is 6-10%. viral shedding is in its highest 6-12months post first outbreak and ususually decreases over time.
obviously this is different for every individual.
eg: if you are on the higher scale of shedding (which you will never know) you could estimate shedding at 40 days or so out of the year.
during an outbreak you should not have sex if you have any prodromes and wait a day or so after the blister has fully gone.
