Hello I just read about your experience, and one reply back to you, so far.  I too wonder why your Dr. would have you in PT so soon ? I had a full thick tear with two anchors (I fell) and when I saw my PA in Feb. he said that I might not  have physical therapy at all, basically, for the exact reason you described your Hitler like therapist  Sometime physical therapist can do harm.  I don't know how they will get my motion back without therapy, but time will tell (a long time I am guessing) but maybe down the line I will go to a PT.  I had my surgery Jan. 25TH and just count weeks, and keep feeling, when will I be normal again?  I had surgery on my right side, and it's been so hard.  From what I have read on line regarding Rotator Cuff surgery is a major surgery, and I guess I just din't realize how tough this would be.  So now instead of weeks, I am thinking I will feel normal or have motion (so I can do my hair) in many months.  What you described about sleeping is just so true, I now have a system of stacking my pillows just right to prop myself up, and like you just want to sleep on my side of the bed on my stomach lol.  Good luck on your return to work.  Do ask your Doctor or PA "why" physical therapy so soon.  Can you lift your arm to your side yet, or at all?  I only do pendulum exercise's and bench that is it.

Do this surgery !! 😂😂😢

I had my surgery 3/20/18. 3 weeks ago today. The pain is so bad at times. Especially at night. I had rotor cuff repair, 2 anchors also bone spurs. I had physical therapy after one week. It has been brutal. I happy to know I'm not just a big baby. I also had my neck fused 3,4 5 6 7 and a plate put in 10/18/17.

I have not written on this for quite some time, but thought maybe now would be a good time to check in with everyone who shares similar experiences with this surgery. I am 15 months post op from rotator/bicep repair surgery. I also had a lot of bone spurs that required scraping. It was by far the hardest and most painful thing I have ever gone through. My brother warned me as he had similar surgery 10 years ago and I can remember him crying quite vividly...a grown, strong, tough man who works in construction reduced to tears. Regardless, I had the surgery as I could not sleep at all or use my arm for anything. I started therapy 4 weeks after, and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. About 12 weeks in, I was experiencing major pain so I had an ultrasound to see if everything was still in place. This was on the recommendation of my therapist, who I have learned to trust more than my doctor! It turned out my shoulder was inflamed with fluid, ( arthritis, so they said..) so I got a cortisone shot which they don't like to do so soon after surgery as it can inhibit healing and make the tissues weaker. It maybe helped 25% or so with the pain, so I soldiered on with my therapy. I was "cleared" by my doctor at 4 months. Which really meant they couldn't do much else for me. I worked hard at my exercises, took A LOT of advil, used a ton of ice, used my tens unit under my clothes at work, and eventually saw results. I had full range of motion back by 8 months, and worked on strength for the next 6 months. I couldn't believe I was still in therapy at 12 months! By now, my therapist and I were best friends! She finally told me she was cutting me loose and I stopped going, only to start again two weeks later. This time, tho, it is for my neck, which is also riddled with arthritis- not sure if it was always that bad and I just didn't realize it?? So- 15 months post op and I am happy to say that at least my shoulder that had surgery is manageable pain wise- but will never be pain free. The massages I get from the therapist are life changing. If anyone out there is in the middle of recovery, get yourself a great therapist who really cares and knows what they are doing. Although she was super pushy and hard on me, and I wanted to kill her early on, she was a lifesaver. Thank God my insurance is good and I can continue going indefinitely. I still take advil after my therapy, and sometimes at night to sleep better.

On a side note, my other shoulder which was worse but "unfixable" due to multiple tears and bone spurs, is acting up now and I can't sleep again! I am afraid I am going back to ortho soon..... guess that's the curse of bad genetics and bad luck. Sorry for the long post- I wish all of you out there a speedy recovery and want to say-don't get frustrated, it really does take a year.

I had surgery 6 weeks ago, very pain tolerant. This is definitely one of the worst pains for me. I get bicep pain sometimes as well, seemingly randomly. Still sleeping in a chair, not willing to sleep in a bed yet until confident it's healed. Just starting the snow angels exercise. Should hurts badly if I drop something and jerk to try and catch it, otherwise, mostly manageable at this point. It's starting to move without me trying, i.e., when walking my arms kind of swing just automatically. Am starting the semi active movement phase. I really had no idea how long this recovery was going to be! I've taken the pain pills only at bedtime to help me sleep. There's sure a lot of things I can't do! Not sure how I would shower completely without my wife for example, one arm doesn't cut it. Still can't really tie my shoes. I do all exercises they have given me each and every day, twice with no exceptions. I did feel a change at about the 5 week mark, pain went down and my arm seemed to move further in the passive movements.

I am post op 7 months, still have pain with stiffness. I have return to work but had to change jobs due to the high demand and work load as a nurse. I have began lifting weights to build up my muscle in my arm, this feels better. I am concern that  over the surgery incision site that it is very stiff and I feel like it is goiing to pop when I lift my arm. I have good range of motion but it does hurt. My Ortho Dr released me and said it will take about a year to feel normal. I have thought about pain management but really trying to see if this will get better or will just be chronic pain for me. Continue to take your pain medication only at bedtime because once therapy gets intense week 9-10 you will need something during the day. Ibuprofen 800mg really helps. I hope you have a good recovery

I had surgery 9/2017. I didn't feel well until 6 months and I still have pain and stiffness. I do think Therapy made it worse but if you don't stretch several times throughout the day and do strengthening exercises you will be stiff and continue to hurt. You can not gain strength until you have full range of motion and that comes with stretching. It is a long long road, most of the people I have talk to said it took them a year to 2 years to feel normal.

Thanks for the info. My shoulder feels something like they packed a bunch of gauze inside it, real odd feeling? Maybe tight. Range getting better, can reach pretty far up with assist. Behind the back is limited still. Tried my TENS unit tonight and it made it hurt more. Need to get a lot better at snow angel, don't go very far yet. Overall, massive improvement lately but I know more pain is coming soon! The bicep pain sure hurts though.

Sorry, didn't notice who I was replying to. I should note my doctor told me I'd be ready for a trip to Spain week 9! Pt thinks I am nuts, but, paid for long ago and am going. Obviously I won't be lifting any bags. So, my week 9 will be week 11 or so when I get back. I don't want to take the pain meds to Spain, lots of paperwork for that. Instead, will just take a non opiod OTC such as you suggested in case I need it. Quite an adventure this surgery. Sad thing is, it's probably likely the same will happen to my other shoulder.

I think a trip is ok if you are not shopping and using that arm a lot. Pain meds may be needed bc a trip to Spain should be fun, Naproxen may help with lots of ice. Do your PT exercises so you don't get frozen shoulder! I am just now able to reach all the way behind my back when using bathroom. My arm is still weak with pushing and pulling and still pain at night but only over that surgery area not my rotary cuff.

Does/did your shoulder feel something like they packed a bunch of gauze inside it, real odd feeling?? I don't know how else to describe it. The entire area, down the back a little even feels this way.

Yes, I will continue with the exercises while there. I always do exactly what they tell me, no excuses.

Yes it feels like that, you explained it well, I assume it's the sutures

I had a full tear repair last May. Nearly a year. Good range of movement and strength but still very achy in bicep and neck. I don't understand how some or us are told 6 months to heal so stop complaining while others are told it can take over a year so be patient and don't worry. I guess that's why we need each other. I say try not to worry as long as it improves a little every MONTH!!

We'll see, but am very hopeful less than a year. :-)

The last week has seen great improvement, in the middle of week 7 now, and, today, walked 11,000 steps. This was impossible a week ago as I would have been way too sore. My arm is actually almost useful for some tasks, I can do many things I couldn't do a week ago. Sometimes, it feels perfectly normal, however, it can quickly prove that thought wrong of course!

I think I agree with you about the not worrying. It seems to be more mental than physical. 3 days ago, the doctor told me to start the wall walk, arm straight out and climb up the wall with my fingers and stretch. First time I tried it, it scared me, felt impossible. It's 3 days later, and it's definitely not impossible. I doubt it changed much in 3 days, it was likely more mental worry or concern than any real barrier.

I'm not trying to be negative, just saying we're all different and not to be discouraged. Just keep at it! Good for you and continued improvement!

Thanks for the encouragement, I have more good days than bad and I am achy in neck also but I know this is because I am using my neck muscle to move my shoulder and shrugging a lot. I am lifting more weights so this is helping!
