After suffering with severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for 6 years, trying numerous drugs, therapies and seeing specialists, I was put on 10mg dose of Amitriptyline per night. And they have changed my life around. I have changed from a person who could barely make it to work, fainting from severe stomach cramps and high anxiety to a normally functioning person - able to travel confidently and live happily.
I can't say that I've expereinced any severe side effects but I do only take a low dose each night. I've now been on them for 2.5 years. I do feel sleepy in the morning but I think that's just me - I've always been like that!
Seriously, do try this drug for IBS and get your life back.

Fancy.
I get IBS.
I find Amitriptlyine can cause constipation, so I do in fact take laxatives with it, at times, to keep myself healthy.
So do you tend to get loose motions, more than constipation then?
The only thing that settles me down, when my tum tum is 'over'active is Buscopan. As it stops all the whoooooo harrrrrrrrr immediately and completely, I don't use that extreme very often though (as I'll only be constitpated again afterwards!).
How individual we all are.
I use Rantidine and Gaviscon quite a lot of the time, as Mebeverine stopped working.
Glad you are feeling better and more confident.
That Actimel (friendly bacteria drink) is good too. Have you tried it?
I've just been prescribed 10 mg of this med for IBS and anxiety, I hope it works for me. Although my IBS has not been officially diagnosed so for its more for anxiety. I sometime only take 5mg and always take it at night, as advised, it very strong.
Just a note to INDIGO; if you say you have IBS not diagnosed there is always possibility, i again repeat possibility not certainity it can be coeliac disease.
I do have coaliac and for years follow all about it.
