The difficulty seems to be weak muscles. I already take Bran and fruit and wouldn’t say I am constipated as such. Is occasional aperient a good idea? if so what?g

If your bowel muscles are weak, you could ask your doctor about pelvic floor exercises to strengthen your sphincter. My mum had a weak bladder sphincter and it caused urinary incontinence. She was given exercises to strengthen her bladder and it worked. She was also given treatment with a special machine. Laxatives will help to soften stools if they are hard but if it is a problem with your muscles, physio may be more effective.
Have you ever try stool softners. They usually help with constipation. Try it will help. Or medimucal another drink for getting your intestines moving.
