hi guys. Had hip done in May. It's going great! Am flying to the canaries next week and was wondering if anyone had problems with security at the airport.
Call your orthopeic surgeon. He/she will have a card or letter for you. You will still be asked to step to the side and have the wand waived over your hip. Help them out by wearing something that obviously cannot conceal. Jeans/pants would be a better choice than a flowing skirt or dress.
Hi Crossy,
Yes...but it varies! I carry a doctor's letter but never been asked to see it! Heathrow is very sensitive to hippies...others less so and some totally no beep!
Happy travelling

hi I flew Spain just over 3 months after hip operation. I have ceramic hip but was not detected by machinery. maggie
It depends if it's a metal or ceramic hip. My knee replacement always tips the machine offoff, then I stand to one side and they call a female officer to pat me down all over. Takes an extra 3 minutes but I've never had to have a doctor's letter. It isn't really a problem because there are so many of us.
Hi Crossy,
I had metalwork in my leg when I broke my femur. I just looked up "broken leg" in Italian because we were going to Rome. So as soon as I said "broken leg" (rota gamba) the airport staff understood and waved me through.
So all you need is "new hip" in Spanish. Google it and away you go.
Have a great holiday.
Thanks for all your advice guys
