Alcohol and enlarged liver

a relative is in hospital with enlarged liver has been in hospital for 5 days and is still confused  due to  alcohol withdrawal and is on diazapan  how long does the confusion last

                thanks all

Diazepam on its on does not confuse you. Not eating , drinking (fluids) and a lack of thiamine and other vitamins/medications can lead to confusion.

Would need to know a lot more to advise.

It can last for a short while or long while my sister has been suffering since june of last yr her liver enlargement her amonia levels staying out of wack it's horrible keep faith n prayer it's sad for me to watch my sister go through this good luck God bless

That's what I mean about medication. The liver will not remove toxins, importantly ammonia. Lactulose will be used, they can even give it in enema format. Hepatic encephalopathy, it is not usually permanent and can be treated, although it generally means they will be taking lactulose for life.

how long was your sister in hospital hope everything works out ok for your sister

I would second this and also say that any medical condition can lead to confusion, as can the effects of longterm alcohol misuse. The confusion should get less as the days go by.

She just got out again since june of last yr she has been hospitalized a total of 7 times she has had several transfusions due to becoming anemia since her mother's been bad very bad confusion very weak and started having memory loss and unable to stand or talk right

They have ran numerous test to see where the blood is going but can't find anything her mouth bleeds all the time for no reason she is on 18 different pills a day I cry just watching her daily

If you mean she comes out starts drinking again and then ends up in hospital, she has to stop or she could end up with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

I've seen someone with it, it is not pleasant.

Esophageal varices is usually a prime target for bleeding. Have they done endoscopy.

No no no she has not drank since last june it's her liver it's really bad

Hi does she have a enlarged liver, or how old is she l hope she recovers,.

She has a enlarged liver also damaged from drinking she is 43yrs old she is always weak yes she takes that lactulose 4x a day 30mg to keep the ammonia levels down it works most of the time but she gets to where she forgets to take it

Hello Tony. This is hard to know since we need more information as other have listed below but I would love to help! Robin

If she's in hospital, they should administer it. It is very important to take it.

very sad

I just got out of the hospital after a 9 day stay.

My confusion went away after day 5 exactly.  Everyone is different thou.  But it should be soon.

They will be giving him intraveneous fluids...and his liver will be very happy.  It has been a little over 2 weeks for me and I feel better..my digestive tract and everything is working out.

The liver recovers quickly (I was told by my Dr.).  It is the brain that does not.

I am having severe headaches...

I'm sorry for your friend..withdrawal is H*LL on earth.  But your relative is on the way to repair of body, mind and spirit if he/she can remain off of alcohol.

ammonia levels go high due to dehydration from drinking.

After the hospital does what they do with the intravenous fluid..I would bet her ammonia levels decrease to a normal level.

Oh...she has not DRANK since JUNE...I don't know if I believe that.

Maybe she is just fooling everyone?  Cause usually the liver repairs.

For the brain, should be taking thiamine and lactulose and for the liver vitamin B compund/complex.
