Alcohol and Prednisolone!!!

I've been really good for 6 weeks, no pain and no stiffness (I'm on 20mg pred) then I go away for 4 days and have 2 beers on 3 nights in a row and I feel awful, shakey, very very tired, and a little stiff!!! Has anyone had this sort of problem?? I have a rheumatology appointnent tomorrow so hope he doesn't suggests upping the pred!!!!

Hi andrea

Have been on preds for 11 months now and although I rarely drink having a couple of beers when out for a meal has never been a problem for me. Hope this helps.

lesson learnt  dont drink when on such a large dose  of pred   they dont mix

Don't tell him about the beers!!

It depends on the person - but I found soon after the PMR first started that I developed a reaction to wheat. Maybe that has something to do with it.

But the other aspect is that you went away for 4 days - what else were you doing? Far more than what you would have been doing at home I imagine! You MUST pace yourself (and not just for the drinking rolleyesredface wink  Lots of people think because they feel so well they must be able to go back to normal activity - NO! Your body remains intolerant of exercise and if you overdo it, you will suffer the next day or the day after that.

I drink white wine and no problem. More tonight as my cousin died at 4 pm today and am currently drinking a toast to him. He is my last living relative and it was so sad being there. I think it depends on the person and if you drank alcohol pre PMS. In all things it's being sensible.

Andrea I have just had a holiday in Portugal, very hot weather, I was having a Glass of wine with dinner everyone ,I did wonder the same thing.Just a little more stiff and tired ,interesting to find out really. I do normally have a couple of glasses a week of wine but went alcohol free for a year after diagnosis. I meant to say Every Night not Everyone haha. Also I developed Prickly Heat for a few days,, which was new to me. Preds maybe ?

I found PMR made me quite intolerant of heat - and pred probably added to it!

I had a month or so with no wine - didn't make the slightest difference so I went back to normal. I had to be a bit more careful - heavy reds didn't do me any good and very dry whites seemed very acidic. It's finally getting back to normal - light reds are fine smile

No more than a bottle a day Eileen (from Lidl of course). hope you are well. Dave (tavidu)

Thank you ALL for the replies to my Alcohol issue!! I'm not normally a 'drinker' haven't touched a drop since the diagnosis of PMR in January!! Feeling relaxed while away thought to endulge in a glass!!! A lesson learned as Pauline said!! Thanks guys xx

No - wine here isn't from Lidl lol   They only sell Italian wine - I support home industries (South Tirol) and Austrian Veltliner is the second choice...

Lidl is for the UK  wink

Little and often?

Moderate alcohol consumption hasn'd been a problem for me Andrea.  And I would consider 2 beer a day moderate.  I'm currently at 15 mg and have been tapering for over a year.  I've enjoyed my one or two wine or cocktails off and on throughout my journey, often on many consecutive days'.

I agree with Eileen.  You have to consider what else you've been up to beyond a 'normal' relaxing day at home....travel, exercise, vacation activities, entertaining, stress etc..  There are just too many things that can affect how we feel with PMR from one day to the next.

Thank you Jean, yes it's probably a mixture of everything out of the 'normal' days activity at home, plus I was worried about being away for the first time since becoming ill, so yes the damn 'stress' thing comes into play yet again!!! Xx

my input was just to say a bit is ok .. i do  1 wine  fri 1 wine sat 1 wine sunday.

rest soda water   how  boring am i    lol

Hi Hilary, so sorry for your loss.  The last living relative, that's a difficult one.   Pat

Hi Andrea

Have been on this journey for 2 and a bit years, When I have alcohol the most annoying thing is it makes me sweat mainly in the night that could also be something to do with my age as i'm 53 but who knows. Currently on 10mg. It as already been said anything in moderation. Good luck

Hi Linda! You're another 'young' person having PMR too! I'm 50 years old. Most of my aches and pains prior to diagnosis I put down to menopause, so maybe the alcohol intolerance is due to that too!! 😄😄

Yes Eileen I feel intolerant of heat too at times, Feel so much better about wine after your reply,I usually like a sweeter wine or Rose so thankfully won't blame Wine. I have only been reduced to 1mg Pred for about a month and think my system is adjusting to normal whatever that may be.Thanks for reply .

I turn 51 just before diagnosis - so there's a few of us 'pretty young things' out there lol

Wine hasn't made any difference to me, and when I have a drink it's more than one or two lol

And I cant tell the difference between the end of the hot flushes and the beginning of the hot flushes! :-)

I cannot drink beer because of the wheat and yeast it contains.  I started to get hives.  This was in the days when I was "young" and I did not have RA and PMR as of recent.  I could always drink red wine which was no problem, except in the last 6 months when PMR acted up much more.  I am trying not to drink wine because of the fairly high dosage (20 mg) of prednisone..... I would like to! :-)
