Alcohol with sertraline

I wanted to ask what people thinkis a inappropriate question as I am going out to dinner next week and wondering if having a glass of wine is ok on sertraline.

I have previously been prescribed citalopram which was ok to have alcohol

which my doctor told me was ok, but in my upset state when I was prescribed sertraline I didn't ask. I'd be grateful for your thoughts, thank you

Hi Anne.

I have consumed alcohol quite a few times since being prescribed Sertraline, although my doctor didn't say anything the pharmacist advised against it.

But after some online research I found others that would drink & have no problems.

From my experience I get drunk quicker than I used to,apart from that I have no other side affects.

I do get heightened anxiety the next day but I can deal with it,before I started taking Sertraline the next day would be unbearable so it even makes a hangover better!

The way I look at is I try to go about my life as normally & positivlely as I can so socialising with my friends at the weekends is part of my life!thats only my opinion & outlook but I hope it helps.

Colin

Morning Colin, thanks so much for your reply, good know you've been ok, I'm not a big drinker but to be able to have a glass of wine with meals and friends is one of life's pleasures now and again!

You've reassured me ☺️

Hi Anne,

I asked my gp he said there's no reason why you shouldn't.

Happy days.

Kevin.

Thanks Kevin,

Thank you, you've put my mind at rest!

Have a good day 😊

From the researching I did,the reason they advise against it is for the obvious reason alcohol is a natural depressant so if you have a form of depression it can make it worse, there's nothing to suggest it can affect your health medically. Recent surveys show a having a glass of wine can be good for your health.

But like other things they advice you not to consume alcohol if you take paracetamol & other every day over the counter drugs.

If having a glass of wine with your friends is something you enjoy & is going to make you happy & relaxed then why not?

All the best Colin

Totally agree Colin, my issue is anxiety which I have battled all my life and have a family history, I also have an underactive thyroid yhst doesn't help but my anxiety has been worse since the death of our son at 19 in 2002, so a glass of wine with friends and family and over a meal

Is a pleasure I enjoy 😊

i would go ahead and have a glass of wine....

i myself not much of a drinker..but allow myself to have1 or 2 drinks on a weekend

and i do feel ok with it even the next morning...but i always take my meds in the morning

Hi, thanks for your reply, I shall and enjoy it! 😊

Hi annie im sure a glass or 2 will be fine. Although when i first started my meds I drank abit too much one night. I woke up in the middle of the night, i felt like id been druged. It was awful. Spent ages trying to get off the toilet. Then when i got into bed my partner put his head on my shoulder. His face was all distorted like a monster. I swear to god i have never jumped so much in my life. I was oviosly seeing things. After that i was more careful. Im on the 13th week now and find i can drink what i want but i do get drunk quicker. πŸ˜• xx

Ooh i would like to add though that I stupidly took my meds late afternoon so that probably didnt help. Morning is always best if you plan to have a drink at night. Xx
