With Christmas just around the corner, there's sure to be a glass or two on offer and I was wondering what the advice is regarding drinking and the drugs we have to take.
Here in the UK, I'm on Rivaroxaban, Paracetamol, Codeine, Naproxen and Lactose.
None of these are antibiotics, so I would have thought I'd be OK, in moderation. Any thoughts?
Norm
Just don’t drive with narcotics. I’m sure you know that. Otherwise drink very moderately.
Hi Nfmiller, well we all know not to mix alcohol with pain killers because of the drowsiness affect. And I thought I read antibiotics don’t work as well with alcohol ....don’t quote me on that.
As for alcohol I asked and was told not to because of a blood thinner I was on after surgery. Alcohol does the same thing. A personal note from me would be to be extra careful if having alcohol as we may have a tendency to fall, slip or be brave enough not to use our walking aids. Lol
Whatever the case i wish you a great holiday season. Hope you get to enjoy yourself. ☺️ Speedy recovery as well.
Norm
I think a bit of alcohol will do you no harm and may make you feel a lot better (and reduce the pain) Just don't overdo it and fall down the stairs.
Oh and if you drink some of that craft beer with yeast in the bottle it should help with the bowels
Happy Christmas
Mike
Thanks for the advice and I'm looking forward to the holiday season. It will be different than normal but I'm sure I'll enjoy it just the same.
Thanks for your good wishes.

Am 5 weeks post op, we had a question n answer about certain things, someone asked about drinking and when he could start drinking again, the surgeon answering more or less said, not so much the drinking that's the problem as over doing it and maybe slipping or falling and doing the hip major damage, as I live in Scotland it's absolutely freezing at the moment so crutches sliding outside on black ice a major issue so more or less advised to not even think about going to the pub for at least 10-12 weeks pre op, though If the bedroom and toilet close at hand don't think any problem in having a few refreshments though think to be on save side I'll give it a miss
OK Mike, maybe the odd glass of bubbly. The good news is - no stairs! Ground floor apartment so that's one less thing to worry about. In the current situation, I think I need a few bottles of that craft beer! 😁😁

Interesting, Brian. I'm at the opposite end of the country in Farnham, Surrey. It's quite mild here at the moment, but I've no intention of going out as its only my 3rd full day back home.
Thanks for the info.
Norm
I remember that Rivaroxaban has no guidelines about alcohol on the leaflet, so alcohol with that one is fine, however if I remember correctly alcohol has an effect of thinning the blood a bit, so not wise to overdo it.
The best advice is to read the information that comes with the drugs, but don't overdo it.
Best wishes
Graham
Not. With codein. Alcohol narcotics is too risky.
Thanks Graham, sound advice. I never thought of looking in the boxes!

So if I can put up with the pain, I can have a drink? Only joking, Brenda, I'll probably abstain - plenty of time for drinking when this is all over.
Norm
I had THR on Aug. Was doing great. 5 wk op i got infection. Hip ame out and has cement in it. Next replacement is probably a month out. So in the last 4 mos i have had no alcohol and not active at all but lost 45 lbs! Not a bad trade off.
Pretty impressive! Sorry to hear about your problems though. Hope you fare better with the replacement.

Well done! I'm afraid I put on weight while I was having my 2 stage. Gradually losing it now I'm mobile, though Christmas may well reverse that.
Mike
You're probably like us, you just throw them away when getting to the pills.
