Alcoholic beverages and LS

Hi All

Does anyone know the effects of alcohol on LS.  (Alcoholic beverages)

Thanks!

Lori, I don't have personal experience with alcohol and LS, but I think we are all very aware of the deleterious effects of alcohol consumption.  I put the phrase , does alcohol aggravate autoimmune diseases into google and came up with pages of answers you can look over.  i know ... i had to give up my beloved chocolate mint cookies .. smiles

 Hi Nancy

I personally am not a drinker but my grandmother had LS  and at 80 years old died of vulva cancer and she was an alcoholic all of her life.  I was just wondering what alcohol does to LS  and how it may have made hers worse.  I have never drank in my life and I think that is the best choice for health  along with many other things.  Her Alcoholism destroyed our family and I vowed to never drink.

Hi Lori - I think the sugar content might be something to consider. In saying this I still enjoy a glass of red 🍷 and fingers crossed I’m doing okay 👌 I’ve proabably just jinxed myself 😂

Ohh you dearheart.... I understand.. I too think alcohol "destroyed" our family. and I too don't drink, neither does my sister but both my brothers do; one manages fine with it, but the youngest who got the worst of the disintegrating family had to finally join narcotics anonymous. He's been free for over 6 years now.  I don't know the whole thing, but i know a weak pancreas has something to do with addiction... but even more important I believe is how much stress is put on us.   My brothers and sister and i have spent a lifetime working to NOT repeat what we grew up under...

My daughter is 33 and when she was younger I let her know what the taste of wine was like but spent some time explaining the family history back 4 generations... trying ot be sure she got the message that there is some kind of genetic weakness to watch out for.  I think I succeeded. she and her husband drink with friends at home while playing games very wholesome but not overdoing it.

Anyway, please don't revisit old hurts... it's hard enough to stay present in this time. honey - grin I speak from experience, it took me years to learn not to go over old offences in my mind, and to let go and forgive those now in heaven and even thank them for the "education".  blessings,

Hi Lori,

I've read a lot about this from others who suffer from LS and the majority drink little to none. I enjoy a beer or glass of wine very occasionally. I too come from a history of alcoholism, so I'm super aware of my own consumption. I do think that once or twice a month is not too much. I have to say also, everybody reacts differently to all kinds of foods and drinks. Hugs!

I enjoy my wine and cocktails and consume as I want. I was diagnosed in April and had my final"look see" yesterday at my OBGYN after my clobe treatment. All good and back to normal for me. Sex as usual and a vagine that looks young and refreshed. ( Started estocreme 2x a week externally) and go back next month. Basically, if you go to the Dr and follow the rules you will survive with or without that Martini! I prefer with!

Lori- I hv heard others say alcohol bothers them and I believe it goes back to sugar content. I drink very dry Reds - Pinot Noir and Cab Sav. And dry whites- Pinot Grigio and Orvieto, all hv less than 1 gram of sugar per 5 ounce glass. I enjoy it 2-3 times a month. I’ve given up so much more ( bye chocolate), that I will not give up my wine too! Stay away from sweet things like Rum and mixers with Juices!

Hi Lori

I enjoy a drink- or used too! But I’ve found it dramatically effects my LS. I’m also prone to UTIs and usually will have primary symptoms after alcohol ‘binges’

I’ll always have a flare after drinking especially sweeter drinks such as cider!

I now save alcohol for high days and holidays but have treatments to hand the day after!

Good luck xx

Hi Ellen ! I was diagnosed a couple of months ago and same as you did what doctor told me and I’m nearly good as new . I have a low oxalate diet and alcohol is low . I drink and don’t worry about it . Have cut out potatoes and chocolate 😒

Awesome! So glad to hear positive results for you as well! My doctor is not a believer in foods contributing so I never explored that path. She just said everything in moderation. Also it helped to be healthy and up to date on Dr visits and annual tests as there was a baseline. It's pretty obvious and I feel awful for the ones here who have not kept up with themselves. Lichen will not go away without steroids. Period. Glad you are well! Yay!

E.

Hi, for me, a glass of wine is okay, two is not, three is out of the question.

We all react differently but the sugars/histamine/sulfites in wine (especially red) can be a major trigger for quite a few with this disease.

You may find you are better with something like vodka or gin.

Well, I'm 75 and have had LS for 12 years.  I drink scotch in moderation (daily) and eat some sugar in a balanced diet...and use Clob as needed.  I'm surviving and don't think any of the other sustaining from stuff matters a wit.

Jeri- I have to respectfully disagree with you. LS is an Autoimmune Disease and if we can learn to heal our immune system by abstaining from things that are making it ill ( such as Gluten, Sugar and Dairy), we can avoid other Autoimmune diseases and live healthier lives. I am currently reading Dr Tom O’Bryan’s Book “The Autoimmune Fix”  and he discusses this very thing. Sometimes we do not  see the symptoms as they are internal, but we are getting sicker and sicker and only notice it when the symptoms are external.

We owe it to ourselves to fain as much information as possible to combat LS amd all other ailments.

Thank you Ellen . I agree about steroids . My doctor said same about foods . I have a drink most weekends and some homemade sweet cakes . It doesn’t seem to make any difference .

100% living my life.

Ellen, has your LS "GONE AWAY"?  Has your doctor told you that you can get rid of LS, PERIOD?   Just asking. That might make a difference to me if that is the case, but honestly after reading practically every single message in here for the last EIGHT months I have not heard ONE woman say that their LS has "gone away" i.e. cured.  in fact I hear of more and more women who say they've had it for 10 to 30 years or more.  There are also many women here who MANAGE their LS quite well, most of the time, WITHOUT using steroids. So your adamancy is a bit uncalled for me thinks.

Hi Karen,

I appreciate you ideas as far as what we put into our bodies, however I do not and have not been convinced this is an autoimunne disease. There is a lot of scepticism about whether it is or not. And the more I read, the facts show that it's not. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Kind Regards,

Marnie

Yes, it is gone. It is in "remission" my Dr. Says it can be in remission for many years or a flare here and there. My tissue is plump and healthy and I had sex last night with no problem.. no aftermath pain, tears, etc. I feel truly blessed. I feel a lot of LS sufferers are not getting good and frequent health care so it gets out of control. USA groups have much more positive outlooks and succuss. This group being mostly UK has it hard to get the help they need. If your calling me out here, shame on you. When I was diagnosed I was devastated and joined here to share my adventure with LS not knowing what way it would go. I have been nothing but honest and helpful.

Ellen, I"m simply trying to get to a good understanding of your intent; pardon if the internet virtual conversations sometimes cause confusion because of lack of body language or auditory implications.

It sounded to me like you were dissing women as if we aren't "taking care of our bodies".  I'm so happy for you that you are feeling so very well, but accusing others of not doing what they can and also accusing others by implication that they don't know their own bodies responses to different foods... well that is not helpful.  It sounds to me like you have just been very lucky that your body responds well to YOUR doctors BELIEF/DISBELIEF system.

BY the by, many women here HAVE mentioned that once they got the symptoms back under control by whatever means, they are then able to eat, in moderation, what they hadn't been able to for a while.
