Alcon AcrySof IQ Vivity EDOF

Surgeon just called, saying that it could be over a year before Vivity is available in broad specter variant. Something which could be expensive if I have to replace specs every 3 months.

The alternative is Panoptix tri-focal. Does anyone have experience of these and severity of side effects (rings, starburst, glare, night vision)?

Hi
Search for Janus post in this forum, he have made a very detailed explanation of his experience with the Panoptix.
I have Zeiss trifocal in one eye, personally I am a big fan of the trifocal, but yes, you have to be wiling to the trade offs with some halos and stuff in the dark.

I have made a decision: going for a monovision, monocular solution with the option for trioptical “piggyback” add-ons later. The solution was proposed by the surgeon and endorsed by the opthalmist and feels like a good compromise. As that puts me off-topic to this discussion, I won’t post more here, but am happy to start a new thread if anyone is interested and sends me a pm.

too bad that you have to wait a couple of months to get the vivity and finally drop that option.
depends on the personal pressure i would wait that time if you are convinced about that lens.
i would give you the advice to get better informed about the two left options that you have. for me it looks that you make your decision a little bit overhasty.
anyway wish you best of luck with your final decision and the upcoming operation

The problem is that Vivity probably won’t be available for me until 2021 at the earliest. The cost of glasses while I wait would be 1/3 of the cost of the operation. With a monofocal/monovision solution, I know what I will get and can correct it later for the same money that a tri-focal or edof solution would have cost, if I find that so many corrective glasses are inconvenient.

ok, so its more then a year of waiting…
but maybe i would go then for panoptix trifocal.
the addon lens is a second operation for each eye with all their risks.
i have not enough background knowledge about that addon lens, but i can think that those two optical devices combined will bring halos, glare and starbust, too. bringing an addon in game is more to compensate and correct bad vision or outcomes but its not part of a initial plan.. at least that is my impression.

The plan is really to live with the monovision solution +glasses. In Norway in winter, a significant and quality part of every day is spent walking in the dark to-and-from work. I meet many oncoming cyclists, with bright lights along the way and am not willing to compromise optical quality for a glasses-free experience. If I knew exactly what I would get with the panptics tri-focals, I might make a different decision, but have been unable to find a reliable simulator. The worst examples I have found online are definitely below the threshold that I would consider acceptable.

Hi Marius
To be honest, I believe monovision is the right choice for you in any case, I strongly doubt that the Vivety is better than other edof´s.
They all claim to have found the holy grail each time a manufacturer comes out with a new or revised lens, but they never have.
I think you will be very satisfied with monovision, you will probably get more independence from glasses than what you expect.
I am happy with my premium lenses, but side effects are always the main reason why some don´t like them, and I don´t think you would be happy with it.
Best of luck with your surgeries.

Thank you very much! I do believe this is the right choice, but now have some example images to show to the surgeon before surgery, just to be sure. I’m now on the bus to Haugesund, for surgery and should have my new eyes by 14:30.

So, today starts year one in your new life
As you know, your pupils will not be normal before tomorrow, and some also have a little bit of swelling of the corneas, that can make the vision worse for some days.
But keep us informed of your results

best luck from my side, too
and yes if you can live with glasses…monofocal is a good decision.

Hi all,

For information, I have started a new thread on this forum to discuss my very positive experience with monovision. I have done this to avoid dragging this thread too far off-topic.

If anyone has any questions about my experience, please refer to the new thread at

HELLO- I’m from the US and wondered if you went with the VIVITY IOL ? If so - what is your outcome? I’m trying to decide between waiting for it as it isnt available here yet- or hoing with the mono iol THANK YOU

vivity got fda approval last month. so your wait should be short. i believe it should hit the market this summer.

vivity has 20/25 at 60cm and 20/32 at 40cm. that is a really good range without any circles. 20/32 at 40cm allows reading of J3. if true it will be a very good choice.

Im from germany and my surgery will be in the uniklinik Frankfurt.

Dr Kohnen the surgeon recommended me the Vivity EDOF IOL with femtolaser insertion because of my 0.7 astigmatism in the right eye.

He said this would be the best lens for me because of the decreased glares/halos compared to symfony or at lara.

My surgery will be in approx 2 months and I will give an update.

Im gonna have to pay 6k
3k for the lense and 3k for the laserthing.

Im 24, 6 thousand is alot, but i guess its better to chose the best so I wont have to worry afterwards if i only took the laseroption.

mister84231 May I have a request? I’m not from Germany, but I live in a neighbouring country. I’m trying to contact Prof. Burkhard Dick from Universitätsklinikum Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum, but I don’t speak German and they haven’t replied to my email in English.
*I’m considering more invasive and difficult procedure than cataract surgery - IOL exchange.

Could you call them for me and ask in German if they offer medical care (eye surgery) for non-german foreigners commercially (cause it’s a public clinc I believe)? If so, how I could schedule an appointment with Prof. B.Dick or perhaps contact him beforehand in order to establish if my case is applicable (I have to fly few hundred km). If they don’t offer such service, is there any private clinic where I can reach him.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

Hi.I have come across this and although you posted a few months ago i thought i would reply.
I have needed multifocal glasses for about 20 years for every activity including driving, playing golf, computer and phone etc.
I am in Australia and had my 1st eye done with vivity in Feb and the 2nd was in May.
The results were instant for me,as far as not needing glasses any more.I can drive and play golf(its so great to follow the ball) read my phone and use my laptop.
I can add some more later if someone would like some more info including a couple of side effects which dont concern me.
Cheers Phil

what side effects do you experience?
how old are you?
congrats on ur good results.

I am 64.i experienced a lot of interference from the old eye after the 1st one was done. That became a disturbance for me .Sometimes i put a pair of my old glasses on with the lens taken out on the corrected side and used some black tape on the other side which made it easier for the new eye to function. Also covid delayed the surgery on the 2nd eye for about 3 months but once it was done both eyes worked better together.
I noticed an arc like shadow on the outside of the vision which was very noticeable at first and mainly on the right eye (the 1st eye). This is called negative dysphotopsia but as time goes on it has subsided a little. Not sure if it will completely go but if it doesnt then i can live with that.It doesnt worry me as much now.
Also on a bright day the vision is perfect then if it is dull later then it is a bit fuzzy but not much and the street lights have a bit of a glow around them.
I find that where vision is used the most in the range of 300 mm and 5 metres (phone, computer talking to other people and watching tv) has been the most beneficial.Anything under 300mm will need help with glasses which is not very often.
Hope that info helps
Cheers phil
