Just to let you know I had my THR this afternoon at Coventry hospital. My surgeon, Mr Cronin was able to do the Superpath method so really pleased and hopefully recovery will be much quicker as no cutting of muscles, just parting of tissues. Had general anaesthetic which Mr Cronin prefers, as operation takes a bit longer. No sickness - had tea and biscuits whilst in recovery room!
Some pain, but bearable - moraine helped and was chatting to nurses and coherent within a short time
can't get to sleep and it's gone 1.15am. Feel a bit euphoric - like you feel after having a baby! Just nice to know it's all over.
All hospital staff lovely. Getting a bit peckish - wonder what's for breakfast?
No white stockings in this hospital - just blow up things on your calves that do the job for you
Feel really good - I am sure that I will get some setbacks on my journey but so far so good. For those of you awaiting your ops please don't worry-it was much easier than I thought it would be
Linda great to hear that all went so well, have you tried your new hip out yet or won't they let you up. I know that in the UK the opportunity to have Superpathhip surgery is limited but in saying that it's brilliant as you have found out. All the best with your recovery which if it goes anything like mine has been you will have to at times remind yourself that you have had a major op and to take things easy . Sure there will be some aches and pain but that's to be expected. Anyway I found Panadol kept that in check.
Good morning Linda ... so, what was for breakast ? Great feeling right, the morning after the day/night before ? well, you might have a busy day ahead of you ... good to know that you are in good hands and surgery went great ... would be nice if we all could benefit from the superpath method right now ... have a great day - warm hug
You are so lucky to have had the Superpath replacement. From what I've heard, you should take less time to recover and less pain. But you still have to be careful with your recovery.
Do hope you've had a good breakfast and are rearing to go!
I had those blow up DVT preventers. Weird, aren't they!
It'll be interesting to follow your progress. Good luck with it all.
Good morning Linda. I'm so pleased you have finally had your surgery, you have waited a long time for it. I'm really looking forward to hearing about your recovery and how it differs from the traditional way. Ive read about people overseas having it done this way and some leave hospital the next day and hardly have any restrictions. It sounds amazing. Good luck x
Congratulations on your new hip! Hope it is as good as mine! It's four weeks today since my op and I'm off for my second post op physio appt this morning. Saw my consultant at Coventry on Tuesday evening for the post op review and he said that they are the only place in Europe using this method and we are an elite group of around 30 who have had it done. I just kept thanking him so much. I really have to try hard to remember how bad I felt before and the constant, unremitting pain. I am walking round the house unaided and only take my crutch with me when I go for my 30 min walk each day. I'm back doing the ironing (that's the bad news), sweeping, mopping, some bending with operated leg outstretched behind. Even the funny feeling I had that my operated leg was longer has gone (it wasn't - the physio measured it for me!).
So, just rest lots and keep up with the pain meds so you can exercise ok and be prepared for "I'm just really tired days". Well done you!
Hi Linda! Well done you! Hope you will be home soon with a good team of helper's! Please listen to your body! It's a major op you've had! Regards Amanda
So glad you are now cleared to go home. Mr Sarantos was my "face-to-face" consultant. I finally get to meet Mr Cronin in three months' time for my next appointment. Ok, so now the boasting - finally finished the awful tummy injections yesterday, so maybe my multi-coloured stomach can start to recover! On Friday at 4wees and 1 day, I drove to my local sports centre (Mr S and physio both cleared me to do so) and for the first time in 2 years, I went swimming. Spent around 45 mins in the pool doing my exercises (so much easier in water) and swam 10 lengths in total (not all in one go). Felt so amazing afterwards, I only had a short rest in the afternoon.
Just remember, that the first week at home is the toughest, because it is only then you realise what you can't do (yet). If in doubt, rest, and don't try and skimp on the pain meds - you need them to be able to keep moving. Will you be having your post-op physio at Rugby or Coventry, or don't you know yet ?
So pleased for you - have a gentle ride home tonight and don't worry if you don't sleep through the night - I'm still working on it!
Hope recoveries going well for everyone, had my superpath lthr at rugby by mr Cronin march 9th so past 3 months now. You still need to be patient with yourself but should be much safer regards to possibility of dislocation. I had bath at two weeks , no problem , of course ...everyone is different... listen to your body, the physio and Michael! my technicolour tum soon returned to normal and hip(ceramic) is great, had some trouble from knee onop side due to posture before op but nearly back to normal now. Had ups anddowns but you remind yourself your getting better and realize you are
been home 2 days. Taking my meds but still getting night time pain. When does that start to ease? On 2 crutches at moment - how long were you on 2 for?
All these little questions are buzzing round my head as to what progress I should be making. I know it's really early days so am not expecting too much. How far should I be trying to walk at this stage and how often? Don't want to do too much but then know I need to move my joint.
Any help or advice in these early days would be useful.
Glad that things are going so well for you
Did you have Mr Sarantos doing your op with Mr Cronin as well - what amazing men they are!
Hi Linda ... amazing right? yes, you are in the early post op stages - there are no Should's, you know - I am on this forum now for almost 10 weeks and it has been and is absolutely fabulous, encouraging and inspiring - we are all different and recovering at our pace - that is what I learned here ... and of course, to listen to your body -
I just feel so grateful to these surgeons and the lifechanging opportunities they give us - you just feel that you want to do the very best with your new hip
Managed to wash my hair this morning, make up on and back in normal clothes - little milestones but they make you feel so much better don't they?
Thanks for your words of encouragement - this forum has helped me so much and given me so much support. -you only understand what people are going through, when you've been there yourself.
Goodness Linda, you are doing so great !!! wash your hair already, by yourself? fortunately I had a home health nurse who had no problems washing my hair, while others had ... couldn't take a shower until staples were removed and then still sort of afraid ... you go girl .... slowly but surely ....
