All estrogen creams cause severe burning and stinging. Is this a sign of an allergic reaction? I'm post menopausal and trying to help frequency of urination.
Hi Patricia, aw thats awful the pain, stinging and burning, are talking about urethral or vaginal pain hear, dont think any cream will help with frequency of urination will it? I may be wrong. Im post menopausal to and i had been experiencing dryness and discomfort, had to stop using the vagifem, not because it burnt but it made me bleed. I was always getting the sensation of having UTI but turned out not to be the case. Any ways i now use this gel which helps and so far no more UTI sensation. Could be your sensitive to caffeine which can cause bladder and urethral irritation as well. Could be a very over active bladder, mum had this and she takes tablets which really help. Ill pm you with what i use and mum takes later. Doesn't sound like like the estrogen creams are agreeing with you at all. Were they prescribed by gp or did you just buy and try them?
Sue
Hi Patricia just to say I too am allergic to all of the creams and gels so that’s why I use an HRT patch. Which is fine and made me feel so much better. Worth a try.
Burning or stinging is a common side effect of HRT creams. If they don't suit you, don't keep persisting and hurting your delicate area. Most products sting or burn me down there. Vagifem made me swell shut. I tried ovestin with great trepidation, but, luckily it was fine. If that had not worked I would have tried patches next.
Hi patricia,
Are you using bio identical cream? Is it being made for you by a compounding pharmacy? If a cream is not working for you through a compounding pharmacy they may be able to change the cream ( the base, carrier ) that the hormones are mixed in that better suits you and not so harsh. It may be as simple as the pharmacy mixing your estrogen in a new base cream.
Yes, my most recent attempt was compounded. It is estroil compounded with a safflower base. I will relay my problem to the pharmacy and try yet another base. I wonder if an olive oil base would be gentler. I have tried other bases, but nothing so far is working. I'm beginning to think I am allergic to everything. It's so frustrating 😢
Thank you for your input. I will consider your suggestion.
I have tried various oils to help with my vaginal dryness. Some of them did sting me. The only ones I get on with are coconut oil and olive oil. Yes oil based lube is fine too - that contains sweet almond oil, vitamin e oil, coca butter, shea butter and sunflower oil. Could you be reacting to the oestrogen? Vagifem made me swell up so much I couldn't even get a finger in - was that the oestrogen or the other ingredients in the pessary?
Hi, I think it could be. I use Vagifem but get none of those side effects. It doesn't help my stress incontinence though as I still need to go as frequently as before using the medication. Maybe you should talk to your doctor again about it as there are other solutions I think.
Hope you get some help with the problem. One of my friends had an operation which still didn't help her but does some women. All the best, Elsie.
Hi Susan, I too feel the UTI sensation and have a difficult time using estrogen cream. Can you tell me the gel you use that has helped your problem ?
