Coming up 9 weeks post op, doing really well. Walking on my own, no pain, looking forward to returning to work, then had a bit of a setback yesterday! As many have said, you get a bit over confident. Walked to tesco, (half hour walk there and back) on the way home carrying two 4pints of milk, the shooting pain at the top of my thigh was excruciating! Managed to limp home and took pain killers straight away. Pain wearing off now, but just goes to show we've still got to take it easy even after 9 weeks.
Hi Susan, I am 9 weeks tomorrow!!! Completely understand!!! I find carrying things to be a bit tiring when I am walking. A short walk (less than a half mile) and i had to stop 5 times. In my mind i can walk fast, but obviously i cannot yet!!! Let's keep chugging along and taking the rest we need!!! Happy St. Patricks Day! Ginny USA NJ
yes take it easy, i should imagine its easy to get over confident, its due to the excitement of being "normal" again! im still waiting for my op, the pains getting worse, and i cant wait to walk without a limp!
Hi all , I am 8 weeks post op on Thursday . Find I have a limp when I walk without a crutch . Starting physio for this next week . Anyone else had this x
I'm just one week post op today. The muscle pain is rhe most intense. My joint feels good. I'm looking forward to walking on my own. I've noticed i can take steps with a limp without the walker but i don't push it.
Sleep this week has been barely any. So i rest and nap during the day. I've managed to get two ten minute walks in a day. Should be three but i'm getting there, Baby steps. Yes, good idea to recover and take a day you rest that hip;
I can't wait to be nine weeks out. Heck six weeks will be great so i can get the support socks off.
Sounds like you're doing great. Gives me hope that my days will be less pain soon.
I'm 9 weeks post op tomorrow and I still have quite a pronounced limp. I've been to see my GP today to sort out painkillers as I can't do the exercises without them. My GP is the only medical person who saw me quite regularly pre op, so he knows how bad I was. I could walk about 100 yards on a good day - with a stick! He says the muscles were so weak because it had been like that for so long (I had to put my op off until January as I couldn't have 6 weeks off work before that) that the muscles have got a lot to recover. I can't stand on my operation leg AT ALL without supporting myself. It's too feeble
I do feel I'll get there but it's so frustrating when everyone tells you it'll be fantastic after the op - and it isn't!
Remember it's a marathon not a sprint, and don't compare yourself with others (although I'm guilty of that as well) as you don't know what their starting point was. All the best x
Hi, I had my THR in October and still have a problem walking as the muscle in my thigh hurts all the time, so you did well to walk all that way after 9 weeks.
Its hard but weneed to learn to pace ouselves.......just a litt bit at a time,rest, a little bit more etc.
The other thing I found hard was remembering that I had to walk back again
I've got arthrits in other places as well and still have to pace myself .......can do a lo more and go a lot further but I have to remember to pace myself whihc is so hard {for me anyway}
Everyone is different. I am now just over 13 weeks and it is only now really that I find I can walk further without any pain. I used to get a pain in my buttock if I walked too far and my legs felt tired, but thankfully now I don't get any pain and my legs don't feel so tired either. The doctors say it is really 6-9 months before we should feel that everything is absolutely fine.
It's so easy to think that you are better than you think, isn't it? I'm great at home, 3 weeks post op, walking with one crutch and no pain! Sometimes I think, 'is there actually anything wrong with me?' when I'm feeling this good then give myself a shake and remind myself what my body went through, just 3 short weeks ago.
I wouldn't think of what happened as a 'setback' as that could put a negative thought into what sounds to have been a very positive recovery! It was just a gentle reminder to take your foot off the gas sometimes when you may be running a little low on fuel.
