am i addicted to codeine?

I have been taking solphadeen max and co-dydramol tablets for the last two weeks to help with pain after ankle surgery. I haven't even been taking the maximum dose, just three times a day. They make me extremely drowsy and all I want to do is sleep, not great when I have a little girl and also want to try and go back to work next week. Yesterday I decided to stop taking them as the pain to my ankle is now manageable but last night I started to feel really bad, goosebumps, chills and then night sweats, feeling sick. This morning I have diarrhoea and just generally feel horrible, I have no energy whatsoever. I don't feel the need to reach for the pills but am wondering if this maybe withdrawal from them? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Debbie. This is certainly withdrawal symptoms. everyone is different and takes different times to become addicted. You need to wean off.

If you are remaining cold turkey, then it shouldn't take that long for the withdrawals to go, especially since you've not been on them thay long. But if you can't cope with the symptoms, you will need to wean of. Take as you did before, and then knock one tablet from your routine. You can either do this tablet deduction once a week or once every few days, whatever you can cope with. Eventually, you will be down to just one tablet a day.

With your weaning plan, try not to think about it. Just take the tablets when required then get on with your day. The whole point of weaning is to make withdrawals manageable, if you do get them at all, and you can do everything as normal. Don't live for the next pill. Yes expect a few aches and weird sensations during your coming off,but know it's all phantom and not a sign of ill health.let Mr know how you do, or if you need help with a plan, please let me know what you take and when.

I've been there and done, it was easy! If I can, you can.

Also, you don't feel mentally that you need them because you were taking them as prescribed. Many of us got attached mentally and craved the high chilled feeling.

Just to put your mind at rest. Here were my withdrawals, very similar if not same ti you

Cold

Sweats

Diarrhoea

Irritable

Antisocial

Restless legs

No energy

Aching limbs

Restlessness

Basically, you feel like death.

Thanks AntMark, I think I will probably just go cold turkey, not feeling too bad and we also have company this weekend so hopefully that will take my mind off feeling rough. I Seem to feel worse when on my own or at night, I guess because there is no distracdistraction.

Taking your mind off will help. If you're up for company then I'd say you're on the right way out. As you've not been on them for too long, it shouldn't affect you too hard. It's basically the drug leaving your system. You don't have a huge build up of toxins due to the short period of time. Good luck and take care :-)

If you go cold turkey then the

Withdrawals should start to ease by

day 3-6 you may find if you are suffering with sleeplessness it may take

longer to regain your normal sleep

routine. You can buy things to ease

the symptoms google the Thomas

recipe. Good luck.

Kate.
