Has anyone had positive experiences using amitriptyline to treat night sweats? I have heard a low dose of 10 mg in the evening can combat sweats and insomnia. Any experiences would be gratefully received. Thank you.
Hi Emma
I was prescribed Amitriptyline for constant neck/shoulder pain. As I'm petite, only took 10mg each night, 2 hours before bed, and found it helped relax me without feeling muggy in the mornings. It didn't seem to make much difference to my ongoing neck pains but at least eased my insomnia!
My only issue with this medication is that it can constipate me, in spite of a very healthy diet high in fibre and lots of water! I did try 2 pills on one occasion, to help my neck, but it wasn't good for my tummy!
I stopped taking, to see if my tummy improved, and now sometimes take 1/2 a pill to ease insomnia.
Apparently, this drug was originally for depression in high doses. It must act as a relaxant.
Hope my experience helps?
Thanks, that is really helpful. I will try half a tablet and see how I go. I can usually tell when it is going to be a bad night because I get hot at about 8pm. I guess that would be the time to take a tablet. Once I wake with a very bad sweat, I am awake all night even when I stop sweating, and then anxiety sets in. Hopefully this will help me to drop off again quickly. Thank you again for taking the time to reply.
My Pleasure!
I've not tried for nights sweats but do find I am a little more able to drift off again, during one of my many wake up periods!
Hi, I’ve not heard of it for night sweats but I do know it makes you sleep well. Both me and my sister have used it and agree it helps you got to sleep and sleep through the night.
Thanks Julie. Good to know.
