Do you take a probiotic? I've had numerous intestinal problems until recently (almost routinely every morning and debilitatingly so). I firmly believe that some of the medications and antibiotics I had been on in the past contributed to certain (proper) gut bacteria being stripped out of my system. Once I began using a good proper probiotic, my gut issues have since gone away. I recommend a probiotic that has billions of active bacteria, but also one that has multiple different types of proper gut bacteria. Also, get one that needs to be refrigerated. The nutrition specialist that recommended it to me said that's important. Don't know why, but I trust her judgement. Hope this helps you and many others with similar issues.

Hi Helen, Please don't worry, it is an older antideppresant, that was what it 'use to be "only" used for + then it was discovered to be good for nerve pain/headaches or sleep & those are the things it is now prescribed for. I have been taking it for about a year (10mgs) ... It will 'not' cause depression + it is absolutely marvellous for sleep, + is not addictive. I hope this helps

I'm 19 I was prescribed these as way to help me sleep because im still a toe walking and nothing help my feet are always tense and this was ment to release the pain to help me sleep.

First 4 days it help me sleep but if I only have few hours sleep it will cause pain when I get up and walk. I'm on day 17 my feet feel worse can't sleep and have few side effects from the tablets, everyone noticed a change where I'm not happy I'm more moody and at night crying to sleep because of pain

Hi Helen. I was prescribed this as a sleeping tablets, 25-50 mg per night, they really help me sleep. I also suffer from chronic pain and peripheral neuropathy, since taking these in conjunction with my other meds, they help both to stay manageable!

Hope this helps.

Helen xx

I am taking 100mg for sleep at night but I also take a quarter of suboxn every morning. When I take the amitripty at night my face gets hot and I get really tired. I take it around 8:30,9pm. And I can't get enough to drink lol. Just wondering if your face ever gets really hot?? Thanks😘

Does anyone get bad nightmares? After stopping sertraline & escalopram due to nightly nightmares for months they still continue at least 3 nights a wks after ending them over 12 wks ago. I started them for anxiety after starting migraines 6 months ago. Only took them for anxiety due to migraines. Anytriptaline is a different class of drug but can cause nightmares. Can anyone advise?

I take 50 mg once at night to help sleep and it works for me. I was sick for awhile and was not able to sleep through a night. Since taking it, I have been able to sleep.

Helen

I'm new to this forum but it seems lots of you have sleep problems and being prescribed Amitriptyline.

I've had sleep problems for years, due to back pain, but was prescribed what was then (more than 50 years ago - I am now 93!) a sleep drug called Nitrazepam. Because its a benzodiazepine drug it loses its capacity to help sleep but leaves you dependent on it, in fact needing even more.

I was recently prescribed Amitriptyline but it didn't help. Maybe there was conflict between it and Nitrazepam - I  don't know, in fact it gave me feelings of panic.

Wanting to get off drugs altogether, whether addictive or not, I did a lot of research online. This led me to the body's own sleep aid, it's an amino acid in the brain called serotonin, which regulates sleep, mood, and even appetite.

Some foods can produce tryptophan which gets converted into serotonin, but nearly all of that ends up in the gut.

I came across a plant extract that contains something called 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). As a supplement it has the ability to get to the brain as serotonin. This boost of serotonin can then help with sleep, mood, anxiety, and many other ailments. You can research it yourself online.

I decided to try it 2 months ago using 200 mgs per night. It comes in 50, 100, 200, and 300 mg sizes so best to start with say 100 mcgs if you try it. You can increase it as needed then.

It immediately gave me better sleep, from 2-3 hours I was getting, increasing to 4, 5, and now between 6-7 hrs, waking refreshed, clear headed, and feeling so much better. I actually feel a lot calmer too, although I wasn't looking for that.

I've posted similar information on this forum, having searched it for serotonin posts but found nothing at all about how it helps regulate the body.

So good is it for me that I found it possible to very slowly taper off my sleeping drug, something I've not been able to do before because of withdrawal symptoms. Now, with good sleep and a VERY slow taper, I have come from 10 mgs of Nitrazepam to 8 mgs without any side effects. I hope to continue, perhaps for another 6 months to completely rid my dependence on the drug.

If you try 5-HTP,  bear in mind although it's natural and not a drug, it may not suit everybody, but from many testimonials I have read about  it, most are positive.

Good luck!

Back to the drawing board so to speak for me, but thanks for your reply.

All the pams are nasty.  Kept meaning to look up 5-HTP and St Johns Wort.  Maybe I should have tried these first.  The main thing about me continuing with Amitryptaline is that even if I decide to cease them due to nightmares in a few wks, I will then expect to experince them for much longer.  I only wanted preventative for migraines and accompanying anxiety, not for sleeping.  Keep in touch.

Hi all I've been on amitryptyline for about 15 years. I take 50mg at about 8.15 every night. I'm finding 3 or 4 hours later I'm still wide awake. They make me so tired all the next day. I am going to the doctors this week to see if I can come off them. I know it won't be easy but I don't think there helping me at all.

Hi . I take 150mg at night . If I take any less I can't sleep . It's a drug that I can't see myself not needling. I never knew that it was addictive. X

I took Amitriptiline for sleeping problems for about a year. It helped me with the sleeping but the side effects were horrendeous and were only getting worse with time. Side effects include extreme tirednes( was unable too face basic everyday duties because of it), excessive sweating, hallucinations, massive weightgain (thats impossible shift off). Awful drug to be on!!!

I have taken Amitriptyline for many years. I can count on one hand how many bad nights sleep I have had over 6 years. So yes it herlps sleep in my opinion.

Hi Helen yes amitriptyline is often prescribed for sleep usually at 10mg. I take tablet at 8 pm and go to bed about 10.30. I go to sleep easily. If I don't take tab for a few nights can't get to sleep at all. Best take during the evening x

Hi dawn , I was just reading through the questions on this site about amitriptyline and saw your comment , I've joined the site so I can reply to you but don't have a clue what I'm doing on computers so I really hope you get this x

.... I had sweats , shakes, fainting(at work, the swimming baths, anywhere!!) , needing the loo constantly , bloated tummy ... I was put on 20mg of amitriptyline to calm my nerves kind of , they tested me for everything they could think of for 3 yrs but nothing changed for me . My Dr was about to go down the IBS route , cos nothing else was adding up , when my consultant at the hospital decided to test me for Bile Acid Malabsorbtion , he sent me for a sehcat scan , and that was it , that was my problem , from what I can gather my pancreas and gall bladder are 'broke' ? ... I now take a medicine called Questran for it , I'm not 'normal' but it helps me so much , I take 4 sachets in one drink when I wake up ... my consultant said some people only need 1 sachet and they are then fine , depends on the person I guess ... I just wanted to say about it cos BAM gets misdiagnosed in about 30% of IBS cases I think !! I've been poorly for 5 yrs now but the last two have been so much better .... I hope it may help you if you have a read up on the illness , wishing you lots of luck getting better cos I totally get how it can destroy your life xx

Hi

I sound exactly like you, I am just reading up on Amitriptyline, as I have been prescribed 10mg to help me sleep and have the same experience as you with IBS (ongoing). I am 56. I hope you are feeling well, and I would really appreciate it if you would tell me how you have been whilst taking this drug? Are you still on it, any side effects? Have things improved? Any advice or comments would be great,  as I am always wary about taking pills.

Thank you, best wishes

Karen
