I was put on amylodipine to go along with my Toprol which wasn't quite doing the job. I have noticed a change in gas, exactly as you described, and abdominal pain or tenderness, more noticeable in the evening. They just recently put my husband on it also. He came home yesterday, had obviously been researching it. He asked if I knew that amylodipine and Toprol were two of the worst blood pressure drugs out there. I did not know this. How nice. I had been on Nadolol (Corgard) for years, and just overnight, it skyrocketed in price. I mean from like $20 to $300 and my insurance refused to pay any of it. So, I got put on these two drugs bc of a pill that probably cost the pharmaceutical companies 25 cents, being jacked up for patients.
Gosh no, I have the severe diarrhea., bubbly stomach too. I can’t go anywhere without a flare up. I’ve only been on Amlodipine for couple weeks. My BP is usually 160/100, it helps some but the bathroom emergencies are crazy! But you’re right I haven’t been hungry since taking it.
I have had similar problems for 5 or 6 years and am now trying to isolate 1 prescription drug at a time. Do you have an update on your condition. The only thing I am certain of is that if I stop taking all my meds the symptons either dissapear or are not as bad
Doctors may be busy but it does not give them the right to be incompetent. (and in my case for so long) If they have to many patients on their books they need to reduce the amount of patients or get more doctors in to the practise instead of worrying about profit.
I have had issues with drugs for some time. I was originally prescribed PPI's to counter act the effect that a strong one a day pain killer (etodolac / lodine) had on my stomach. I started then to have reflux and a burning at the back of my throat so had to have an endoscopy which came back as nothing to worry about but some evidence of scarring due to reflux. Move on a few years and I was prescribed 2 blood pressure tablets. 10mg of ramipril and 10mg of amlodopine. Then my stomach problems started albeit on the back of a couple of bouts of food poisoning. I was taking lansraprozole which had co-incidentally been changed from a take one as needed with the pain killer (which was about 1 a week) to take one every day. Since then I have had bowel problems involving 6 or 7 trips to the toilet usually in the first 3 or 4 hours of the day. Had various tests including lactose and wheat intolerance which all came back clear. Sigmoidoscopy that only discovered a couple of divicula followed by a colonoscopy that also came back clear. A change of tablets from Lansraprozole to pontoprazole which definately made things worse including now having some accidents where I didnt make it to the loo. Terrible terrible acid reflux with even a piece of toast and a cup of tea. This resulted in severe burning at the back of my throat in the voice box which earlier this year I had to have a biopsy for which came back clear. On the back of this and a persistent cough my ramipril was stopped and changed to 8mg of candescarten and for a few weeks my bowels returned to normal but not the reflux. Then my doctor suggested I needed to go back on to PPi's so we started another one of those and the symptoms all returned again.
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE REFUX AND BOWELL PROBLEMS ARE THE RESULT OF A COMBINATION OF A REACTION CAUSED BY AMLODOPINE AND THE PPI's. Having said this the only drug I have not stopped taking while experimenting is amlodopine and tomorrow I will top taking this and see what happens. I actually had what I thought was an appointment with a specialist days ago but when I got to the hospital it was with a nurse and I was basically told I was to fat and drank to much. What a waste of time and NHS money
I have been on Amlodipine for about 1 1/2 years. most recently I’ve loss weight unexplained and have developed diarrhea. I am only 124 pounds now from 140. I’ve been through most of the symptoms including panic attacks, heart palpitations, headaches etc. But the diarrhea is a new symptom. I’ve tried to quit Amlodipine several times but have only lasted 2 weeks at the most before my bp would shoot up again. I’m believing for a miracle to be able to stop this awful drug. I am also on Bystolic.
You are not alone I too have had the same issues while take this drug .
I am experiencing exactly the same issues. I started Amlodipine 5mg early this year in addition to Lorsatan HCT100-25mg, to help control my blood pressure, lately, I started noticing persistent flatulence, bloating and constipation. I once tried a higher milligram a few years ago however my feet started swelling as soon as I started, my Dr asked me to stop it. This year he introduced a lower dose again, no swollen feet but the gastric issues have been so bad. Over the weekend just out of curiosity i googled “amlodipine and digestive issues”. I will stopped the amlodipine, I feel much better already in just 1 day. I will see my primary care physician asap.
Thanks for sharing your experience..
Its not just you!
Lately I’ve become very bloated and my feet also have started to swell at night.
10mg per day for about two months and this just started.
I’m fasting now and feel the same way.
Now what do I do?
Its not just you!

hi , this just me and my thoughts , i am convinced Amlodipine causes crohn’s disease ,so your stomach problems just might be the Amlodipine , me i get burning ears bullous spots , spots in my head , itchy head ,edema in ankles, dry mouth ,then drink copious amounts of tea ,so pee very lot due to water tablet ,you have to take to combat the buildup of fluid that Amlodipine causes , then in my head think i must be losing electrolytes due to peeing , over the years of taking these blood pressure meds , been hospitalized 3 times due to dehydration , oh and tumour in salivary glands due to dry mouth (but been cut out) , but docs say they keep on taking the Lodi , we will deal with each problem as they arrive. me about to try K2 . you been on yellow card scheme ,
Thank you for giving your experience with the drug. Ive been having the same issues but couldn’t figure out why. I suggested to my Dr that it could be the drug but he shrugged it off and said that wasn’t possible. Could you please tell me what drug you witched to for your high blood pressure and also if you experience any of the same issues?
thank you.
Sorry to say I am still on it - had a scan to see if any of my problems could be diagnosed and they told me I had gall stones - I have now had my gall bladder removed but still experience problems - mainly with heart burn. I need to be tested for Hpylori and gerd etc but with the pandemic coronavirus I don’t like to go to the GP at the moment. When measures are lifted a bit more I shall have to go -I’m wondering whether to come off amlodopine for at least a week to see if there are any improvements.
I will say, call your GP and discuss it again. At least, you are armed with some more information regarding possible amlodipine side effects.
yes I have been taking Amlodipine for about two months and during that time I have developed really bad acid reflux. i have searched the web and there are a few scientific papers that have shown a definite link between Amlodipine and acid reflux! I have an appointment on Monday to,ask the GP to change my tablets.
OMG I’m in shock! I’ve been having terrible abdominal pain for months! I’m now being seen by GI and I’m taking three different prescriptions to help with this pain and nothing is working. I had an Upper endoscopy along with a Colonoscopy last Friday and they found slight irritation in my stomach. I’m so upset right now. Why would my PCP not mention this when I saw her for the abdominal pain? Should she not have known that this was a side effect? Wow!!!
I have been on amlodipine for about 2 months now for very high BP. At first I was thrilled because 5mg controlled my BP very well and I had minimal side effects, just a little shoulder pain. But soon I noticed that I was gaining weight, despite eating less and less. I lost my appetite.. I never had so much as indigestion in my life before. Then the awful liver/intestinal problems started. Pain in liver, flatulence, diarrhea, all day gut pain…my digestive system reacted to everything as though it was poison. I could no longer eat or sleep, and would have to go to the bathroom constantly in the night to avoid soiling myself. I weaned myself off, and felt better within 24 hours of stopping it. I am so relieved. That stuff was killing me. I also lost three pounds almost immediately. But now I have to find some other drug to control the BP.
yes, i experinced GERD symptoms while actively taking 10mg of amlodipine. i am 5 days off this horrible drug after 4 months of torture. i had upper back pain and left sided chest pains so bad i ended up in urgent care. chest xrays were normal. i started mylanta then things became worse and i ended up with PVCs that are benign on EKG.
do not take this medicine, ask for something else. im 33 years old, my only issue was high blood pressure and now things are worse. i dont drink or smoke
awful medications and wrote to Teva about it. had diahrea repeatedly…New Dr took me off this medication in 2015 and all went back to normal
