Anal fissure, botox - still regular bleeds & fibre not helping much. Diet change?

Hi all
Just after some advice please. Seems I’ve always had trouble going to the toilet since I was a teenager, and my stools haven’t been “right” (rabbit droppings) and I started to suffer from piles. I didn’t have the healthiest diet to be honest.

When I reached 40 I had been eating much healthier for a few years but the condition got worse and I took advantage of my hubbies private healthcare and discovered I had an anal fissure & apparently had had it a LONG time! Long story short: I had the botox treatment and started taking both psyllium husk capsules and drinking fybogel daily.

3 months on and its stopped bleeding most of the time, but I’m still getting consiptated at least once a week and the occasional rabbit drops, and every now and then it bleeds. Much less than before, but I’m worried it will never heal fully.

Will it? Should I take even more fibre?

The problem is that the fibre makes my stomach feel really off and makes it churn. I often feel a bit sick in the morning.

Would a change of diet help / anything making things worse? I currently have a home made low fat cheese and ham sandwich with low fat mayo and sweetcorn made with 50/50 bread (I know 100% wholemeal would be better but I can’t have that for other reasons I won’t go into here), a whey protein shake (made with semi-skimmed milk), the occasional satsuma, banana and once or twice a week a protein bar, and in the evenings a healthy meal without high GI carbs - i.e. no rice/potatoes/pasta (only have these once a week). I.e. salmon/seabass/chicken/minced beef (chilli con carne, spag bol using courgette instead of pasta, home made meatballs) and vegetables (sometimes with cheese) or salad.

We no longer have access to the private healthcare so cannot reach out for advice there and to go down the NHS GP route could take months or years so thought I’d ask for advice please from people with experience in this topic!!

Many thanks
S.

I used to have similar problem. I solved it by taking Polyethylene glycol 3350 (Miralax or equivalents) daily for about a week to clean up. Now 5 prunes a day will take care of it. Cut down on fiber. Too much fiber will make constipation worse.

To much fiber is not a good idea and drink lots of water with any additional help you use. I use. Lactulose 3 tablespoons mixed in water. Look it up online.

Thanks both, I hadn’t thought about “too much” fibre being a thing, seems it certainly can be… will cut back and try a softener; I think I’ve got some lactulose actually…

O dear had a very high fibre diet 50 years and constipation problems 55+ years! On Laxido sachets daily.

Not sure why your post was hidden Trevor - I am able to read in my email though. Thanks for the reply. We actually both had really bad food poisoning so have only just got back to our usual diets; will trial the lactulose soon!
