Analysis of joint post surgery

Hi All- can you tell me if your doctors told you after surgery how bad your joint actually was?

Thanks. Donna

I asked my

Surgeon that and he smiled smugly and said' if it was not bad we would not have replaced it '... think that meant

He couldn't remember !

Wow. I'm surprised. I just think X-rays aren't always accurate and they can see a lot more once they're in there. I think the Dr ought to be able to tell you.

Some people have been allowed to take their hips home with them or they are shown them after surgery if they ask.

That's cool. I'm going to ask.

Grinding "bone on bone" the cartilage was completely gone. Worn out after 63 years. Horrible pain. Couldn't sleep at night. Unable to ride my horse :-(

Vickie, my hip pain does not usually keep me awake at night. My pain is not an ache but sharp pains when I move in certain ways. For instance, when I get in or out of my car, when I turn over in bed, or when I get up from sitting. All day long I'm saying "Ouch!" Right now after the injections on Tuesday, I'm feeling pretty good.

It's amazing that steroid injections can bring us relief. Manta ppl get good results from them but in my case they got to where they didn't last long. I'm glad it is helping you. Are you to the point of considering replacement?

TC Vickie

Mine told me before my op that my joint was in a terrible condition caused by severe OA - which is probably why I had the op only 6 weeks after seeing the surgeon. (By all accounts pretty quick for the NHS.)

Hi Dirfoto

Had mine a year ago and yes Surgeon came to me whilst in theatre and told me I was in so much pain as I was bone on bone no carteledge at all.

Thankfully no pain now and back to normal.

My surgeon was the third Dr. to tell me how bad mine was.  My femor top had lost blood supply and died.  The rubbing of bone on bone had destroyed the socket.  I had originally scheduled my hip replacement with a doctor from the hospital where my daughter works.  The day of the surgery it snowed so surgery was cancelled.  The doctor himself called me to explain that he didn't feel comfortable doing the surgery and was referring me to another doctor with more experience in my type of condition.  I had the x-rays at the time and there was nothing where a hip joint should be.

Hi,

I stayed awake throughout my surgery.  After he detached the bone, I asked to see it.  It didn't look good at all.  Most surgeons are very busy so unless you ask, they probably won't think to tell you.

Vickie, I am at that point now. My previous injections only lasted two months. They can only be given every three months. If these current injections do not last three months then hip replacement is the next step. Last week, when I received the injections, the surgeon said that we may have reached that point.

My hips surgeon did an MRI of my hip before surgery so he would know exactly what was wrong. We were both surprised it showed a cracked bone, torn ligament and of course the arthritis.  I had been in horrible pain but had no ideal my hip was that bad. He fixed it all during surgery. Grateful. 9 weeks post-op with pain never fourth of what it was before surgery. My primary care had sent to a back doctor who was wise enough to recognize it was more my hip than my back. Getting a correct diagnosis is not easy.

'Getting a correct diagnosis is not easy'.......

That is so true Linda.  Prior to my FHR I had torn my Labrum in my hip.  It took me 4 different doctors and over a year later before I finally diagnosed it myself by researching my symptoms on the internet.  I printed out the information and give it to my back specialist (who thought that the pain was coming from my back issues, not hip).  He read the information and asked, 'are you having all of these symptoms?'  When I told him I was, he referred me to a orthopedic surgeon.  That surgeon did a physical and was able to determine the problem immediately, even without an MRI.  Of course that had to be done prior to the surgery in order to confirm.  The body is a complex thing and there are so many things that can go wrong.  We hope that our doctors can diagnose and fix everything, but that's not always the case.
