After my wife's gastric bypass her ferritin levels have been on a steady increase. Over recent years at least over 500. Last year she had a major psychosis breakdown and lost touch with reality. I have thought perhaps small infarction's due to lack of oxygen to her brain. I could be wrong. Last month her blood test showed absolute anemia and the PCP recommended a stool sampling thinking bleeding. That was negative, so they up her iron three times daily and re-do the blood test along with a Rectic test The question is can iron deficiency anemia over a long period of time cause dementia like attributes? Thanks for your response. She has memory issues along with severe personality changes. Thanks for your thoughts and replies.
how old is your wife? Dementia is linked to Aluminium, so if you suspect it, make sure you reduce Al intake (some baking powders, anti-antacids and also use deodorants w/o Al). Iron is linked to many processes in our body, so it is not excluded that things are linked, however the data you provided does not seem to be correct. You said ferritin was at 500 and increasing and she has anemia. Usually with iron deficiency anemia ferritin is decreased.
