I broke the end of the fibula off walking on uneven pavement and my ankle kind f rolled. I have been n either a cast or boot now for about three months. The current x-ray looks just like the one on the day of the injury in that the bones have not healed together. The Dr says that is as good as its going to get and to now resume normal activity without the boot. My question is why don’t they perform surgery on this? If t hasn’t healed by no w will it?
Hey Donald I too had a fibula fracture I was in a boot for four months. They determine whether you you need surgery by a gravity film. Its just a xray where they put a foam triangle under your calf and see if it broke all the way through.
Thanks Bobby! Is your ankle healed now? Of course I’m not a doctor, but the x-ray now looks exactly the same as the x-ray when I first injured it. Are you out of the boot and walking normally now?
Yea I'm out of the boot now buy I still can't walk normal yet its been five month's since I rolled my ankle and snapped my fibula, I've had two surgeries on it. One to put the hardware in and another to remove it because of infection.
What did your doctor say about the possibility of surgery? You might want to consider a 2nd medical opinion from another doctor if you are not satisfied. I think when my son broke his fibula I read that the fibula isn't really necessary as it carries a small percent of the weight compared to the tibia. And that sometimes the fibula is removed and used I other parts of ones body to aid with healing of some other bone break. Weird. My son was in a cast and then a boot and all went fine. I think that you would want to avoid surgery rather than to seek it because of the added risks of things that could happen. What ever happens I wish you a well and complete healing/recovery.
I agree totally k had surgery and the risk definitely outwaid the benefits
