So far I have been doing pretty good with rehab. I am a little more then two weeks when I started walking and PT. I am slowly getting ROM back but I have noticed the past few days that I am getting stabs of pain in my ankle from time to time. I asked my PT about it today and she said whatever I am doing when this happens, stop doing it or take a break. So later today I notice they just come and go whether or not I am doing something such as walking or simply elevating my foot. It is annoying. They occur in different places, not aways at the same place. So does anybody else experience this. If so has it gotten better? It isn't something that has slowed my completely down. In fact I am still progressing. It's just annoying. They are not excruciating at all but I certainly don't want them to be more frequent or get worse.
Dawn I think it's pretty normal. I get shooting pains when I'm tired, overdone it, or its too hot or too cold.
My physio had told me it takes awhile for connections to wake up. Tendons, ligaments, nerves, veins and of course Bones, need to re establish pathways and patterns. Basically wake up. Ongoing process.
You sound like things are going well. I remember way back when you were down with reading about scary experiences.
I'm walking pretty well now, though I still take my Walker ( JOHNNY) to town. Both legs are trying to heal. Having 2 in house with broken bones been a real challenge.
It's 11 months now for me, and I need a good dose of physio for encouragement. Insurers cut me off so we have a lawyer sorting it. Yay.
Next I want to bend down, squat kinda. Just awaiting MRI and x-ray of both legs.
Sons wedding in 2 weeks. Can't wait. 3pm till late! Not sure how long I'll last in good shoes, but trainers will be onboard. Sons mother in law I'm a wheelchair ( since 19 years ), so I'll just blend in.
Keep up your wonderful progress!πππΌππΆπΆπππππͺπ£π£π£π£π£π£
Hi Dawn. I have been out of plaster & moonboot for almost a week. I'm still on crutches most of the time, but when I walk on my own I also get sharp pains in my foot & ankle. They come & go in different places. I asked my physio if the sharp pains were normal & she said yes they are to be expected. The fact that they don't tend to be at the actual fracture site is good as means the fracture site is quite stable. I think it's just muscle stiffness & inflammation in the tissues. It's a hard road trying to walk again isn't it...Justine
Sometimes time is what heels. Muscle and the tendons that support the ankle are more common to take longer to heel especially in the legs and lower back. In the ankle, there are two tendons that are often strained after surgery. These are the peroneal tendons, and they stabilize and protect the ankle. They take the longest pt and walking in sand is a great way to improve the heeling rom and even walking in water.
Hey dawn i was talking with my doctor and i ask about if i have pain is it normal ..he told me yes it is because the muscles have been stuff and to take pain Medicine and rest take it slow but if it get worst go to your doctor i am also workin on walkin im taking ut slow my doc said i don't need pt so i havent had pain yet....good luck and rest up
Totally normal and it will go away with time. It's a moving target.
Hi dawn I'm about 6 weeks out of cast walking fine without limp back to driving , phyiso finished as I've made good progress I think it's my beach walks which has helped with this . I still have bad swelling and discomfort when walking but like you I have stabbing pains never know when there going to hit me but I'm thinking its nerves pain quite painful at times but passes after a few minutes . My main concern is my ankle turned very itchy then spots appeared I called to see GP who said I had a fungal infection off sweating in the cast , give me steroid cream and that was nearly four weeks ago and it's still not cleared seen my phyiso this week for the last time and he's concerned that one of the spots could be turning into a ulcer which has me very worried as I can't get an appointment with my GP for another week , Has anyone else got an infection when cast came off
Honestly, it could be something as simple as bruising that isn't visable. I'm pretty sure i'm experiencing the same thing. Does the pain spike up your leg?
Thank you all for your input. I am glad the pains are normal and won't worry about them too much then. Hopefully they will diminish over time.
I'm curious if they spike up your leg or not?
I'm not sure what you mean so I guess no.
Oh okay, These pains are only in your anke? back of your ankle, side or front?
Oh, duh.... mostly both sides
They don't travel up any further then the incision.
At first, I started getting pains shooting up my leg however, that didn't last too long. My heel and foot is actually quite sore, weight bearing or not. Turns out it's bruised, haha.
Entertaining reading ππ
Took me ages to decipher ROM, PWB, FWB, etc, and I have a University Degree.
Let alone ORIF and other terms to do with break is. My Specialist said I'd snapped .My Fibula like a carrot and dislocated ankle. Nothing fancy. Maybe he thought I was stupid lol.
Too late, past caring. As long as I'm improving. πΆπΆπΆππππͺπͺπͺ
Maybe u should go see your doctor about the infection and continue to put cream on it and wash it with dial soap..how long did u had to go to therepy
So what a difference from two days ago. Well last night I was up and didn't sleep much and blamed it on my ankle. Then I rode my horse today and had the best ride ever. I rode for 10 minutes longer then before and even posted to the trot with absolutely zero ankle pain! I got off her and when I was done I was actually able to walk completely normal for the first time. I forced myself to walk faster and I found that I could. I was still wearing boots from riding so I don't know yet if I can do the same in sneakers. I am hoping I can maintain this and it is not just a fluke. But it feels great. I'm going for a bike ride later today so now I am resting up for that. I was waiting for a day like this where just for once things feel a lot better. I was so excited about it and wanted to share my awsome news and to let you know it is possible to have significant improvements.
How is everything going?are u still walkin wit the boot on? How long have u been back walkin? Have you been limping? Are u still having pain?
So happy for you Dawn. That's how it works. At first nothing seems to work right and one can get really down, then you get days when everything is amazing. Then some days come again, at times, where you feel not quite as good, but in the next day or so you are better than ever. The best judge should be looking at the trajectory. Always remember how you were a month ago, and then you will really realize with amazement what a good job you and your body, working so very hard, have done. Sometimes you have to go through a storm to notice rainbows!
Think of them as each little part of your foot firing up. They are good pains actually you will find looking back.
