Anterior hip revision

I had a total hip replacement 10 years ago using anterior approach. Last week I had a revision of that surgery. They removed the old hip prosthetic and put in a new one using anterior approach. Anyone else had this done? Wondering what to expect

Like to know why it lasted only 10 years

I know a guy who had anterior approach. He was back at spin class in 2 weeks and back to work at 4 wks

Hi Michelle,

I had revision earlier this year. It was replaced after 6 years and is a complete success. I am back to enjoying all the things I love to do. Bless my surgical team and surgeon! Revision specialists replaced all the origional components and hope this one lasts for 25 years and your Too!

Sending u healing blessing. Keep us posted on ur progress.

I had anterior approach left THR 2 years ago,, and now I had my right one done anterior approach October 25th ,, two weeks latter was infected and had revision surgery in November, plus sent home on IV antibiotics but still the infection was there so I had a third surgery but this time they had to put a spacer in and cut me posterior and am awaiting a fourth and final hip at the end of January,, did you get a infection or why a revision surgery after only 10 years?

Omgosh how old was this guy! Must be in great shape. This being the second hip on that leg! I can imagine doing all that so soon! 👀

So,sorry Joyce you have been thru a lot. I think infection in hip after surgery is always a concern. What type of infection. Always been my biggest Fear!

I hope and pray ur next upcoming surgery goes well!

My origional hip hip was replaced after 6 years components failed. Had revision earlier this year. Also waiting for the other hip to have the vupmreplaced .

I too have cement spacer. Lab showed my crp was <3. Under 20 is good. Just waiting to hear when i can have the hip fluid cultured. As time goes on i am more miserable with hip pain. No rx works! Do you get any relief?

Hi Brenda,

My heart goes out to you. Just the pain alone can take it toll. It's the waiting that made me go nuts! There is a  Lots of support on this forum, helped me thru the waiting.

Crp is that the synovial fluid test for white blood cells infections in blood levels. I experienced metal poisoning from cobalt in my hip replacement. Long story. This caused corrosion of the tissue and small microscopic partials in my blood levels.

Keep me me posted .

many healing prayers sent ur way.

Thanks Hope,, it was Staph infection, not sure how or why it thank God My surgeon acted right away to start solving the issue,,

You are told that infection is always a risk but I didn’t think it would happen to me since my left hip replacement went so well,, I am only 48 years old and very active so has been hard,, I was told if all goes well a hip can last up to 20 years,, I’m hoping so, cause I don’t want another surgery of any kind after the 4th upcoming hip surgery

I know what you mean,, I also suffer with restless leg syndrome since the spacer was put in,, it has now been 3 weeks since the surgery to put spacer in,, and I am just now getting relief,, it’s been a long 3 weeks and didn’t think it was gonna get better but it has,, How long has it been for you?

Hi Joyce .

I had my first hip replaced at ur age and I'm still rockin it 20'years later.

keep me posted. Always around . Many hippies are very supportive.

Hi Joyce,

Just caught the restless leg issue you have. I had that too, very annoying, my surgeon said surgery/injury can set it off. I took magnesium supplements really helps, or get magnesium spray and rub on legs 1 hr before bedtime.

🤗

That is wonderful to hear!! Thank you!

Hope

I will try the magnesium,, thank you

Hi Joyce

I had my hip revised this year. Infection was diagnosed in November 2016. They took out the old hip and gave me a spacer in March 2017 and I got the new hip in July 2017. My spacer was not too bad. I could partially weight bear but it was a bit sore until they put in the new hip. Recovery has been a lot slower than when I had the original THR. Now, after 5 months I am still walking with a bit of a limp but the leg is gradually getting stronger. I just spent Christmas with my daughter in Chamonix (though I didn't ski!!) I rtealised on the way to the airport that I had forgotten to bring a walking stick (which I tend to use walking the dog here) but I survived without it and I think the little bit of uphill walking I did has helped.

Nobody really knows but I think I got the infection while I was having bowel cancer surgery several years ago. The infection took two or three years to get to the stage where it was diagnosed. I'd just assumed my hip was gradually getting a bit stiffer and painful. The old scar is not really visible when you look in the mirror so I hadn't noticed that it was red and inflamed.

I too don't want any more surgery especially not on this hip!!

Hope yours turns out OK.

Mike

After my THR my CRP went up to 415, I think the surgeon was a bit worried. I had lots of steroids and it went down again to 55 over a period of time. They still do not know what is causing it. I just have lots of blood tests.

Almost 3 mos

I cannot stand the cement spacer any longer. I cry every night trying to get into bed and then when I am in bed I can't get comfortable any narcotic muscle relaxant whatever the doctor has given me has not worked. my CPR was less than 3 so I am hoping I can go in and have the fluid around the hip tested. If that fluid is clear then I can have the replacement. On top of all of that I seem to have hurt my left arm by putting all my weight on it with the Walker and the crutches it hurts just to move it I just cannot get comfortable and I am ready to give up

Brenda

Yes I found getting in and out of bed the worst thing. Luckily I was not too bad once in bed, but I tended to wake up and go to the loo a few times in the night uggh!!

How long have you had the spacer? Mine did get better over time - very fortunately as I had it for nearly 5 months.

But it will come to an end and you will, I hope, find that the pain will go when they give you a "proper" hip.

I hope it is very soon.

Mike
