I've read many posts and none mention the anterior approach. No glute muscle is cut, so rehab is shorter and the new hip has no limitations. I've had my left hip done in July 2010. No problems. At 200 pounds I can deadlift 300 pounds. I'm 54 years old. Peace
I had the Anterior in 2010 and believe this procedure is a faster recovery and less limitations BUT 5 months post op FOR ME, femoral nerve damage reared it's ugly head and IT band damage persists almost 4 yrs post op.
There are comments here on Anterior and even Femoral Nerve Damage.
If you had good results, why not do that one again.
That's a lot of weight lifting!!!
Actually I started a new discussion on anterior approach about one month ago.Happy yours has been with such good results.
Well thanks as for my next torture I will have to consider which approach has fewer negatives. I regret the abductor muscle cut on the posterior as stretched over the prosthesis which may be oversized, it can impair healing. Still going to Osteo 1 yr on and still pelvis misaligned .... Who knows ..... Who cares!
Hi Philip Most of the respondents on this site are from the UK and we only have one surgeon in the whole country who does anterior approach!! Guess that's why you don't see it mentioned much!!
Have you read jilliboss story what happened to her?She had I think anterior.and the prostetic head was also to big?
She had a revision now healing well.
Any procedure can cause complications.
I.hope your feel better soon.
Thank you. I know her name so will look back over posts. Didn't realise either that uk has only one surgeon doing anterior procedure. I would have thought that each patient should be assessed as to which approach suits best. The leg is going to rotate mostly inwards with erosion of the joint..or maybe it dies not in all cases.. We can only pray they know what they're doing!
Greetings Gentilleschi, I also had the anterior approach. I choose this method b/c it's rare for the hip to dislocate. And there are almost no restrictions.
But the front approach , the os had to deal with the hip flexors and extensions. So that cause me to not be able to lift t that leg while sitting To Do things like putting my foot and leg into my jeans. I have to hold the leg up and put it into the jeans leg opening.
However I can lift it while standing
Other people have had femoral nerve damage.while people what have posterior approach can have sciatic nerve damage.
There is a new approach I learned on this site super pan. This is only a three inch incision and doesn't require the OS to dislocate the hip.
That's done in the states. But only seven surgeons can d do that surgery.
Ginger that makes sense. 20 years ago I tore the ligament in the groin to the femoral head. It grew back so tight, it caused the joint friction over the years. But when laid up waiting for it to grow together I could not raise my leg . It took 16 weeks back then So maybe that ligament is the one they sever in the anterior as it is freed up now and I can raid my leg at right angle. In order for it to heal, the leg had to be straight for many weeks.
. In the posterior, the abductor is cut and stretched which has been my bête noir as that side now is wider than the other and I can't lie comfortably on that side. Does yr leg feel loosely attached? It ain't right that you can't raise from lying. I could not, but after 30 weeks or so it came right, but I did Pilates as well as could but took loads of rest for first 6-7 months. I really
don't understand how I suddenly was able to raise it.
During surgery i can see how some mobility is increased by damaged tissue being released but after sewing up surely there is a cut off point (sorry) for optimum healing time. Something wrong with yr result. Have you pursued it?
No my leg is just rt. Not loose at all.
It's sitting when I can't lift that l eg. Many people on this site who had the anterior THR had the same problem.
I'll be five month on the 14th oct
I walk four miles a day.some day five. Also do cardio three x wk.
Did your doctor tell you it's possible that the prosthesis can become loose? Mine didn't. I learned this here on the site.
The people in England have a second THR just 11wks later. I could have not been able to be able to bare that much wt on the operated side.
I met a chap on a cruise recently who had both done same time. He couldn't keep up with the Pilates classes but was only 8mnths. It took me about 7mnths before I went back to yoga tennis etc. I couldn't even consider doing my other one yet. Osteo said operated butt muscles slack hence reason I feel so weak in my scaffolding! I get discomfort after a mile or two walking. I had not considered loosening a pissabolity, but fractures, yes. I sleep, badly so this has stalled my getting to the club daily. If you don't exercise the muscles get flabby in a nano second. Just one more thing to fret about. She said to do the clam (self explanatory) but it feels so easy can't see how it could firm up my butt. Who can be asked to do squats and lunges. I guess walking out would do it equally well. We got our English foul weather now til May so there's no incentive. It's rain rain and more rain. As for my other hip which is just starting to hurt permanently, I just could not go through surgery again. It was devastating and I'm still a bit in shock. Of course that cd mean the other one will be a bagatelle , inch'allah!
Oh well my reply to you just got censored....harmless it was ...I used some foreign vocabulary .. Maybe they'll delete the last line. Hope I'm not banned!
I did receive this one lol
I got sensored for putting in over the counter herbs.
Hi
I had a THR with the anterior approach. Mine was done by Mr Wooton in Wrexham Spire but Mr Gandour (think this is correct spelling) also does this hip replacement in Cardiff Spire.
How was yr surgery and result? How long for full mobility. Hospital experience. ..was it nhs or pte? I am thinking ahead when my other one is no.longer tolerable as had such a bad experience the first time posterior approach. Getting some feedback from UK patients who underwent Anterior...Thanks Sarah
I was so worried about the surgery but was really good, no real pain. Was out after two days. Mine was private through a BUPA scheme at work. Recovery is so quick. No restrictions. You can sleep on your side, etc. Was on crutches for a couple of days, then down to one crutch and no crutches after about 2 weeks.
Brenda, I'm very happy for you.Your doctor did an amazing surgery on you.At last I hear good news following anterior THR. You go girl.:-)
