I had anterior THR at the end of March. I am numb from the middle of my thigh to the outside side and slightly under. It's numb from the top of my hip to just above my knee. I was wondering how long this takes to go away?
I'm a year out from an anterior thr and I'm still numb on the front and side of my thigh. It's about a 4 inch wide swath that runs about 7 inches long around my scar. From what I've read on the net it's pretty common with the anterior approach and you don't always get the sensation back. I will say, that at a year, I am much less aware of it and find it less bothersome. Not sure that's what you want to hear but otherwise I'm doing well. Working, active and enjoying life😀
I'm not real bothered by the numbness. After all it's a small price to pay to be able to walk again. I was under the impression that most of the numbness would be gone by now.
Evening Sn0wflakes....I too am suffering with what Is called femoral cutaneous nerve pain and sensitivity. So was yours right away? Is it sensitive to the touch? I'm sensitive at the front top of hip, down front of thigh and on side of thigh. I'm numb at side of hip close to second incision a good 4 inches then the sensitivity starts at lower side of thigh to knee. I had rhr last July....anterior....3 weeks and 2 days later I'm having a total hip revision due to dislocation. 2nd surgery was posterior. I started noticing that my pants and shorts were bothering me. Even the soft blanket I had was bothering me at night. It started like 4/5 months later. I've been researching and come two things this could be....inflammation neuropathy (which can happen after hip surgery). or Meralgia paresthetica. Basically a trapped/damaged/injured nerve. I'm hoping to see a neurologist to pinpoint what it really is. It's very annoying, I've had it now a little over 6 months. As for how long it lasts....well I think for some time. I've had injections in the nerve in groin area twice and taking lyrica. Had had minimal affect. I've read this is curable but depends on how bad nerve had been injured. And it will take time. If you find a solution please let me know!! I'll let you know what I find out. I've also read this can cause stiffness in the hip joint. Are you having that problem? I am. Wishing you all the best for healing. Hugs 🤗 Linda
hi snowflakes,
warm welcome to the hippies forum -
it would be nice if you could share a little bit more about you -
Have you seen your surgeon for a follow up appointment (usually around 6 weeks) and mentioned this to him/her?
and if so, what did they tell you?
I understand that it is not uncommon to have some nerve issues post-op anterior approach to THR .. muscles, nerves and tendons are not cut but either seperated or manipulated so surgeon can get to the hip joint - sometimes numbness can occur when a nerve has been too strechted -
not sure how long it takes for it to go away -
please let us know how you are getting on otherwise, ... love to know more about you
...
big warm hug

Hello Linda. I am not bothered by my numbness. I have had it since the time I woke up from surgery. It does not bother me. It's just a weird feeling to touch your leg and not feel anything. I've only felt the numbness and ocassionally a momentary sharp pain follwed by what I can only describe as aburst of tingles. Kind of like a firework. It only last a few seconds and happens now one or two times a day. I'm not sure if it's the nerves reparing themselves. I am not really bothered by it, I find it a bit interesting mostly because there's no words to describe it accurately! I rub the numb area every day, just running my hand up and down it with a little pressure. I don't know if that helps to stimulate the nerves or not but as long as it doesn't hurt I will do it! I have massaged that area from day one. Mostly because it felt so strange to be numb. Maybe that had something to do with no other issues with the numbness. I am not having stiffness in the hip joint but I am experiencing an strange "thing" in front of my hip. If I sit for more than 20 minutes, it is difficult to walk right away, it takes anywhere from 6 to 12 steps before I can walk "normally" again. I believe it's a muscle, though PT has been unsuccessful in getting that muscle to cooperate. I had a muscle issue prior to surgery in a different location and my chiropractor referred to it as a mean muscle. I need to drink more water and was told I need to eat more protein. Both are hard for me to do. I don't really care for meat much and other protien based foods don't interest me. And the water part is even more diffcult as I have an allergy to water. Fortunately it's not sever. I am able to drink small sips throughout the day and get the minimum in but if I get sick it's diffuclt to catch up. I can't over exert myself or I will sweat and that causes hives. No prolonged water on my skin. Though I double up on the Allegra and can take a super quick shower (no hair washing in there, just body). Anyway, the water is suppose to help with muscles too. I'm hoping to try to get a bit more in to help with this muscle issue. And I'm looking into protein powder to see if I can get a bit more of that in my body too. I wish you the best and I hope your issues are resolved. We all have an interesting journey, don't we?
