Anterior THR

Good morning. Day 6 after hip replacement. Made huge progress from start, now plateau. Trying to reduce swelling, use ice and elevate and do 2 sets if exercise. Also trying to reduce pain from about consistent 3, Tylenol and tramadol very little impact. Tried the oxycodone but still about 3. Any thoughts? Thanks much. Joann

24 post op today. It was a bout a week for me Anterior THR that i struggled most with pain.

Increased to 2 Oxy tabs every 4 hours for about 5-6 days. Overnights were/are the toughest. Be aware of constipation side effect (it was tough). Decreased back to Tylenol at week 3...

Hi Joann had THR on Monday.. hip great a little sore!!

My only problem was with the meds as they made me giddy and sick. I have stopped taking strong pain killers during day just take paracetamol but at night I take something for the sickness then one strong painkiller. It seems to be working so far but will adjust if I get too uncomfortable.

I spoke to loads of people who hah had THR and came to the conclusion we are all different and experience things in different ways, especially when it comes to pain thresholds.

I it's early days for us so I think we should take things slowly, take whatever meds help and get plenty of rest.

Hope this helps x

Hi Joanne, I'm sorry to hear that you're having pain but it's not unexpected. A consistant 3 is not really that bad though so I'd say you're doing fine. I'm at day 11 now and consider myself extremely fortunate that I haven't had that much pain at all. I can say that my pain has definitely subsided from the 1st week however so hopefully that's your silver lining. As my surgeon said and I'm a firm believer, let pain be your guide. If you're feeling it, stop, elevate and ice it. Works wonders for me. Just don't overdo it. It's a marathon not a sprint. That's what my wife keeps telling me anyway. Good luck to you.

Thats very good advice..worked for me!

Hi Joann, my best advice to you is to take it easy, if you are in pain STOP. Whether you had anterior of posterior hip replacement you had major surgery, so be patient and listen to your body

hi joann,

warm welcome to the hippies forum -

you are doing great !!!

where is your pain located ?  around the incision, or just discomfort -- pain is to be expected, whether you had anterior or posterior hip replacement surgery ...

You just had major surgery where muscles and tendons were manipulated to have surgeon be able to get to the joint, dislocate, and put in the prothesis ...

If exercises make pain worse, do less for now and slowly increase -

please keep us posted on how you are doing ...

big warm hug

Good morning Lady Reid.  Thanks for input.  I have also queried many and we all heal differently.  Also told:

"we will recover as quickly as we put in the effort.  Meaning, take meds as prescribed (staying ahead of the pain) and dig deep and do the exercises given.  Move every hour, stay hydrated and have a positive attitude. " Have accepted that I will have pain around a 3 and have increased tramadol and tylenol to regular presecribed maximum and appears to help a tad.  I will just work through it and hope for small progress during week 2.  Have also accepted that my schedule (especially mornings) is a strange one (shower, change bandage, dress,do exercise, take meds, take lovenox shot, raise leg and ice while I start my work day and walk two laps around the house every hour).  I have no doubt this will improve.  Have a great day.  Joann
