Anxiety causing IBS, or something else?

Really hoping someone can shed some light on my symptoms. Over a month ago now I started getting trapped gas, mainly feeling it in my chest which would cause a lot of gurgling. My stomach for the most part has felt fine. I'm occasionally getting a bit of heat in my throat but I think that's from me trying to push out the gas and causing a mild acid reflux so not another symptom. When I first had it, the gas was mainly stuck so my chest hurt quite a bit, however now it tends to pass a lot easier so the chest pain is less. It pretty much went for just over a week after I started taking probiotics I had in, but I ran out after about a week and it came back. I'm back on them now and waiting to see if they help again. Some days are worse than others, where I'm gurgling pretty much constantly, the entire evening. It tends to stop once I lie down in bed. I have never really been able to burp, it happens at random about 3 times a year, but this past month it's happened a few more times. When I was younger, it was common after I ate to 'gurgle' in my throat for a couple of hours, this never caused issue and just stopped at some point without me even noticing. This is worse than what it was like when I was a kid though.

I'm 28, female and I walk for about an hour a day, sometimes longer. I eat lots of salad and vegetables. I do drink coffee but have switched back to a coffee/chicory mix. I did stop coffee for a bit but found it got worse. I don't smoke and I don't drink alcohol or fizzy drinks. Despite a good diet and exercise, I am a bit over weight. Could this be a case of IBS? I had been suffering anxiety prior to this and was having some palpitations after a time of bad stress but that was months ago now. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my Dr isn't helpful and I tend to try treat myself naturally first.

I am unsure if you have IBS.  IBS would normally cause shifting abdominal pain and bowel habit change as well as the gas and acid reflux.   You could try cutting out gassy foods like brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli to see if that helps.

Bicarbonate of soda can help to release gas.  However, since you have had symptoms for month, you should see your doctor.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about that but I have gas getting trapped in chest as well just sometimes. I have ibs d and have gone gf and df. I gave up coffee that was a maj change for me but now  drink chai tea w lemon. And just occasionally have some gas pains but not as bad as before. Since most items have gluten it tens to be a lil difficult but more and more restaurants and vendors offer gf items. Since being on gf/df diet I am no longer bloated after pasta. And over all fell much better.

Funnily enough, I'm getting abdominal pain tonight. I have been going to the toilet quite a bit, about three times a day and my stools are quite loose/soft (sorry if tmi) but since I eat a lot of salad/vegtables I just assumed it's because of that. I saw my doctor when it first started happening, she gave me a test for something she didn't think I had (took a month to chase and get the results as she never bothered to contact me like she told me she would) and thought I had too much acid. I'm going to try a different doctor though. Thank you for answering

Sorry, new here, what is IBS D? And do you mean gluten free and diary free by DF and GF? Just wanted to check. It did start when I had been eating a lot more wheat than usual as I try keep it out of the diet as much as possible, but since then haven't noticed any cause and affect with it. I should cut it out completely for a full month at least though to properly see. Thank you for answering, I'm glad you're feeling better.

Going to the loo three times a day doesn't sound a lot. I am luckly to go once a day!  However, if the consistency has changed and you are getting shifting abdominal pain, see a different doctor and ask about IBS.  These other symptoms may fit with IBS since you are also getting gas and acid reflux.

I had to see lots of different doctors on eight occasions and only one helped me and said I had IBS.

Hi, you could try enteric coated peppermint capsules, they are commonly used for IBS, they are anti spasmodic and calming the digestive system down, other things you could check out are Turmeric and coconut oil, it's sort of trial and error finding things what may help.

Hi, I don't reckon doctor's will diagnose IBS until you've had tests like colonoscopy and maybe endoscopy etc, and they find nothing and then say it's IBS.

I was diagnosed with IBS without a colonoscopy or endoscopy because I had no red flag symptoms.  I think what tests you get depends on whether your doctor thinks you need a specfic test.

IBS D means Diarrhoea caused by IBS, as opposed to IBS C (which would refer to constipation caused by IBS). Maybe keep a diary of your food, bowel habits, and this reflux-type problem you're experiencing to see if you can identify any food that might be causing it.
