Anxiety causing insomnia - please help!

Hi:

I have been unable to sleep for months due to a somewhat traumatic event that occurred.  My doctor prescribed sertraline as she believes I am depressed (I am not just sleep deprived).  Also gave me lorazapem for 30 days.  I hate both these medications and stopped taking them.  I am pretty much anti medicine and am looking for suggestions as to how people deal with anxiety induced insomnia.  I have heard of trying melatonin, valerian root, etc.  I am desperate as I truly fear what this lack of sleep is doing to my health.  Please help me!!!  Thanks.

Lesson to the doctor it will help

There are many reasons so, that we cannot get proper sleep at night. It may be due to some mentally and physically problems that is keeping you awake at night. It is very important to take proper rest. Avoid sugar or caffeine after dinner. A few session of hypnosis can lead to a better night sleep. There are a many reports which results that hypnosis can be a good thing which promoting better sleep.

Mary Ann you need to taper both medicines you used.

Hi there:  I have tapered off both meds.  Can’t sleep and looking for ‘natural’ solutions.  Considering valerian root. Desperate for sleep!  Thank you

Go to a sleep clinic you may need a cpap machine

Have you considered trying Yoga? The breathing techniques you learn can really help you to relax naturally. I found breathing control stopped my panic attacks, it gave me the means to slow down everything until I felt OK again. I would recommend it to anyone having anxiety or stress related issues.
