Anxiety help

I've been having anxiety for years on and off but this time I'm crying, feeling out of control and not coping in general. I'm on 40mg citalopram for 3 months now and still feel crippled by anxiety. Doc said they could do no more as I was on the highest dose. Don't think its helping at all. Going to go back to docs tomorrow to see if they can do anything to help. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I too have suffered for years.

There are lots of different antidepressants out there and some are better at helping anxiety than others.

Obviously everyone reacts differently to medication so it really is trial and error.

I'd ask your GP about trying something else, but obviously you will probably have to taper off the Citalopram first, so be prepared for a rough time, but then not everyone is effected by tapering.

Good luck

Sorry to hear this. Anxiety can be so disabling and underestimated.

Mine started three years ago with an infection and today has been quite bad.

I am not takig anything for it.

Regarding your question about medication , it sounds as though your GP may wish to review the drug you are taking and may try you on anther one. In the meantime I would try deep breathing exercises as these are effective in calming the brain down and inducing relaxation.

Hope you get on okay.

Hi Elaine you need to change antidepressant citalopram iworks well for some however it is a case of trial and error for any antidepressant.l also suggest you ask for therapy as antidepressants are not a cure and you need help to manage your anxiety. Also practice relaxation you will find loads of them on YouTube.Find one that suits you and do it regularly. Also exercise is also good for anxiety and do not under any circumstances isolate yourself.

Hi Elaine,

So sorry you're struggling. I have recently started Citalopram and after 3 and a half weeks I am trying to keep going and power through. Have you thought about CBT? I have my assessment with a counsellor in a couple of weeks and I hope it'll work hand in hand with the citalopram.

I agree with the above, try some meditations on YouTube for anxiety. There are loads and sometimes you can find one that really works for you. Also the doctor might be able to suggest a different medication as citalopram doesn't work for all!

Keep us updated, sending love x
