Hiya
My operation is next Friday and I'm really starting to feel nervous about it.
I suffer depression and panic attacks which makes things worse.
I'm only having a hysteroscopic myomectomy and yet I keep having morbid thoughts..I keep dreaming that it's going to go wrong and that I won't wake up from the general anaestetic..
I'm going to ask for a pre-med before my operation..
Is a pre-med dangerous?
Apologies for going on..I'm just really scared
Any help would be much appreciated
Regards

Hi,
I havent had the proceedure you are havng next week but know a couple of people who have and I have been under general for a couple of other things and havent had a bad experience yet. Its understandable you are feeling anxious about it but have been told by my friends you wont regret it and it will be all worth while. Try and focus on the advantages of it all and how much better you will feel soon afterwards. Start planning treats for yourself for the near future when you'll feel like a new woman and when the morbid thoughts start creeping up on you think about the treat, start planning where you will go, what you will wear etc to take your mind of the other stuff. Try not to think about next week, just the weeks after. Keep smiling, give yourself a pat on the back for being strong and before long you'll be back here giving comfort and advise to the ladies who are where you are now. Youre going to be fine and fibroid free. X
I've got a paris trip organised for the end of May, which I use to focus on but it's hard as the op is getting closer and closer
What happens when you first go into the hosiptal..do you go to you bed first and basically just wait until it's your turn? Can I have some one sitting with me at the ward?
How doe's it feel to have a general anaestetic? does the room just go black...
sorry about the questions..I'm just really anxious and worried

Hi Tezi
I just wanted to wish you luck tomorrow for your pre-op assessment - you will be fine.
A premed is perfectly safe and as I have said before, it would be a really good idea for you to have one as it will make you feel relaxed and calm.
Tomorrow will be a good opportunity to discuss any queries or worries that you have - I am sure you will feel so much better afterwards.
As Pepsimax says, once it is all over you will be the one to give help and advice to others - think how good that will feel!
Take care and try not to worry. I'll be thinking of you.

Hi Tezi again (just seen you next posting!!)
Lucky you - a trip to Paris! That's really well-timed - you will be fine by then.
You may be shown straight to a bed or you may have to wait a while outside the ward - it depends on how busy things are. I'm sure it will be quite okay for a friend to stay with you - check at your apt. tomorrow.
Once you've had a premed, you will very quickly start feeling very relaxed and sleepy and you won't worry about anything. It's then quite likely that you will be taken to theatre in your bed, most hospitals do this these days. A porter and a nurse will go with you. You will firstly go to the pre-op room where the anaesthetist will be - you will have met him beforehand on the ward. The ward nurse will still be with you, but don't forget, with the premed you won't be worrying about anything - just feeling very sleepy. The anaesthetist will then put what's called a butterfly in the back of your hand (a tiny needle) and he will put in some liquid, ask you to count to 10 (you probably won't get past three) and - hey presto - the next thing you know - it will all be over.
Hope this has answered all your questions.

Hi Tezi
That is exactly how Katie.K describes it - then you wake up, thinking have I have the op yet, then slowly realisng, yes you have.
Please stay calm and thinking of you, you will be fine. Just focus on the trip to Paris.

Hi Lin/Katie,
Thank you for your encourgement. I went to my pre op this morning it was really helpful.. Nurses were lovely and reassured me that it would be ok.
I'm actually first on the list..I was told if I have a pre-med then I would have to wait longer..which I don't want..so I'm going to be brave and go without the pre med. What do you think?
I feel much better..nurse said my op was classfied as 'minor' but it's skillfull and thats what's going to take the long to do..
Tezi x
Well done Tezi
I'm so pleased that you now feel so much happier about everything - I said you would!!
It's great that you are first on the list - it will all be over and done with in no time.
Don't worry about not having a premed - things will be happening so quickly everything will be a blur and you won't even think about it.
Keep smiling and let us know how things go.

Thanks Katie
I've been told to get to the hospital for 7.30am as I'm first on the list..what time do you think will be my operation..What will happen from the time I get there until I have my surgery..
Have you ever had a general..does it hurt? what does it feel like?
Tezi x :?
Hi again Tezi
If you go in at 7.30 I would guess that you would probably go down to theatre between 8.30 and 9.00 - certainly no later. The nurses will be busy taking your details etc so the time will go in a flash. You will be asked to pop on a theatre gown - the fastening goes at the back!
Yes, I've had three general anaesthetics in my life - they are a doddle.
Once you have the tiny injection in your hand, you will be out like a light and won't know anything until you wake up when it is all over. You will then be taken back to the ward and left to sleep. A nurse will be taking your pulse and blood pressure prabably every half an hour for a while just to check it is all normal - there is nothing to worry about, I promise.
Just think how lovely it will be not to have really heavy, painful periods ever again.
Take care and if you need any more advice you know where I am!

Hi Katie,
Does the injection hurt..I remember my monthly zoladax injections that I had to have..they were really painful
I've looked on the internet about people's experience of the general and some say it's like falling through a table..is that what you felt...?
How do you feel when you wake up?
I'm still feeling nervous but a little better than before
I wish I could go in this Friday and get over and done with..
If I go in a 7.30 and my op isen't until 8.30 god 1 hour is a long time just to be sitting there....
Tezi x
Hi Tezi
No it won't hurt - it's just like a little scratch on the back of your hand - a little green thing called a butterfly is then taped on your hand and then the anaesthetic drug is injected through the tiny tubing which, you won't feel at all.
All I remember of my general anaesthetics is counting to about two and then nothing. The next thing I knew was waking in the recovery room with the nurse saying my name. Each time I didn't think I had had the op - it's a strange sensation but really lovely when you realise it is all over.
It's natural to feel a bit nervous Tezi but honestly, you will be fine.
It's probably better that you stop looking things up on the internet - everything sounds scary on there when in fact it's not.
Good luck and I will be thinking of you.
Katie
Hi Katie,
Thanks Katie for getting back to me..I feel a little at ease knowing it's not going to hurt..Do you remember in my last few emails were I complained that I was having chest pain a couple of months ago..I did see a cardiologist and he said it was anxiety..I did have a chest xray and a ekg which came out normal. I also had a 24hour heart monitor put on me..I haven't had the results yet but it has been several weeks now..no news is good news right.. Anyway my concern is if this will affect my general anaestetic..the fact that I have chest pain...But then again the heart consultant would of known right..or invesitgate more if there was a problem...
Does the time you wait go quick if your first on the list..an hour and a half looks like a long time to be just sitting there...I'm worried that I will start feel anxious just waiting doing nothing....
Sorry to go on..
Tezi x
Hi Tezi
If there had been any problems with your 24 hour heart monitoring you would have heard about it by now. I'm sure your cardiologist is absolutely right in saying that your chest pain was due to anxiety - stress can cause all sorts of strange symptoms. So you really don't need to worry about that - your heart is perfectly healthy - and the x-rays and ECG prove it.
From when you arrive at the hospital at 7.30 the time will go so quickly Tezi, you won't have time to think let alone worry. You are very lucky to be first on the list and not last!
. There are bound to be other gynae. patients in the ward who will also be waiting - they will be very envious that you are going first!
Take care and keep smiling - you will be fine!

Hi Katie,
When you worked as a theatre nurse did you have any paitents that had serious complications from the general anaestetic...
I keep having nightmares of the operation and me not waking up..it's horrible
I've tried hypnotherapy but it dosent work..
Tezi x
Tezi - hand on heart - I never encountered ANY patients who had a bad reaction to anaesthesia. A few suffered with post op sickness, but anaesthetics are so much more advanced (ie much safer) these days that even this can be easily sorted.
Please don't worry Tezi - you will be fine I promise.
Probably the reason you couldn't be hypnotised is that you were just too tense. I tried it once and got the giggles - the hypnotist was not amused so that was the end of that!!
Take care

Hi katie did any ur paients die because of general anaestetic?i keep having nitemares that i dont wake up-its horrible-also i think im abt 2 get a cold-cant believe!will my op b cancelled if i get a cold..is it dangerous?sorry 2 go on hun im not coping well - sad tezi x
Oh Tezi - what are we going to do with you?
I promise you, I have never encountered a patient dying through having an anaesthetic - please put it out of your mind. You are going to be 100% fine and this time next week you will wonder what you were worrying about.
You probably just think you are getting a cold. Have lots of Vit C - oranges, tomatoes etc and drinks lots of fluids. If you still feel sniffly tomorrow, Vick have brought out an excellent product called First Defence.
It's a bit pricey but can be used on several occasions. It's a spray for the back of your nose to stop colds in their tracks - I swear by it - though it's not very pleasant to use at first. You really do need to be cold free.
Please try not to worry - you will be fine!

Hi Katie,
I haven't actually got a cold..but I just felt I was about to at the weekend..My voice was going funny and my chest was feeling tight..I have used a vick spray for the throat just in case..
I was worried that my chest was not ok..It's feeling really tight....
If there was a problem say with my heart or any other organ with the anaestetic..would the theatre staff just stop giving the anaestetic drug...
I've had a terrible weekend Katie..I almost thought about not turning but then I realized I had too because the fibroid will continue to give me problems until I ave surgery.
My surgeon's medical secretary said that he only does operations under general anaestetic..but I've read that it actually can be done under local anaestetic or regional anaestetic..On Friday will the anaestetist ask me my preferences...could I say I prefer a regional...or is it up to the surgeon...I'm getting really scared now katie
Tezi x
Katie,
If I did get a cold will my operation be prosponed..What will happen then..
I've already had 6 zoladex injections..my next one would be due next monday...
I'm feeling a really tightness around my chest and it feels tender..I think it's just stress and axiety but it's really freaking me out!
If I did get a cold could they not do my operation under regional?
Sorry Katie I must be driving you mad..I'm just really depressed
