i woke this morning at 6 am could not get back to sleep, the anxious, depressive mood cloud slid over my head and stuck there all day until about half an hour ago so 7 pm in the evening!! All day I have worried about going back to work tomorrow after being off sick with anxiety but right now I think, what you worried about!! I bet in the morning I'm anxious again!! WHY!
Does anyone know why?
Hi Liz.
I too have have awful morning anxiety and did wonder why I was positively baulking at the thought of getting through a day.
Cortisol levels are at their highest first thing in a morning (stress hormone) Anxiety produces cortisol, which then feeds the anxiety, producing more cortisol and so on. Low blood sugar in a morning can also be the culprit. Recommendations suggest you have a small snack at the side of your bed to help your blood sugar levels stabilise When I first wake up, I literally have to force food in to try and calm my anxious body down (rich tea biscuit helps) as does eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day . Keeps the fuel feeding the brain. If too low, triggers the symptoms of anxiety ready for the flight or fight process. The physical reactions then start to kick in. I appreciate that this makes it sound so easy to keep under control. Some days are a struggle, but I do try to get up, have shower, put on some music or anything that distracts from overthinking.
I imagine if you have had time off work with anxiety, going back is no mean feat. I have been absent from work for a month and the thought of returning next week is somewhat daunting. I can totally sympathise. I do think I am better once I am there, as at home too much time to be stressing about stressing.
Hope this helps a little. 😊
Hi sue
I'll try eating something when I wake. I always feel so positive in bed at night that in morning I will be fine but it's like
groundhog day!
I just want to enjoy life again, relax and enjoy my work and time with family and friends, instead of feeling like the daft woman who can't cope!
I think my anxiety and depression is linked to the menopause so I'm hoping the AD I'm on and HRT will help.
Good luck to you and thanks for your reply, love this forum, makes me feel like I am not alone.
X
I just wanted to say good luck for work today. I hope it goes well and you dont feel too overwhelmed by it all.
Yes, the menopause can bring with it an array of unwanted/unpleasant symptoms. Anxiety and panic/ feeling down to name but a few. As an aside, the menopause forum is also a good place to chat with women having tne same experience. It does make you feel you are not really going mad, that there might be some light at the end of the tunnel and is somewhere to have a good old rant if you wish.
I have had this anxiety since HRT was withdrawn 10 months ago. No ovaries, no oestrogen. It was like hitting a brick wall. A visit to a female GP this last week put paid to that. She gave me a small dosage patch and advised to wait a month, then go back if mood still low. May need AD to give me a boost. You didn't say how lomg you have been taking your HRT and AD''s? They can take a while to have a noticeable effect. If they're not doing the trick, go back and ask for a change of medication or the dosage may not suit.
So, remember your are most certainly not mad, it's just a hormonal blip and eventuallly the Liz everyone knows and loves will be back! X
Hi Liz I am the same and was saying this to the my doctor the other day. I feel so anxious when I wake up..all day panicky...ocd and it is a struggle to get through the day..come night time I feel a lot more normal. This is the 3rd time I have had severe Anxiety and Depression and everytime the nights are better. I was told it is common in Depression for this to happen....mornings are worse and nightimes are better.
Hi sue
Thank you so much for your reply. This forum means so much the support is brilliant and a life line for me.
I was reading yesterday about how to help morning anxiety and read an article about cortisol levels etc. one lady said she eats a tea biscuit the minute she wakes up to raise her blood sugar levels and also uses positive statements to say to herself to combat the negative feelings you feel with anxiety.
I had a digestive biscuit this morning and listed all the things I feel I am good at and proud of once I woke up.
I still had slight anxiety but felt ok going into work and have lasted all day!! Very proud of myself! Felt able to cope too.
Just have to do it all again tomorrow lol but I am hoping this is a positive huge step after 8 weeks off work.
Thanks again for your kind reply xx

Liz, I know your post is old, but did you AD, and HRT help. I a in the same boat, and wondering how it worked for you
Have your cortisol levels checked. Thats common with low cortisol levels in the morning. Yes anything can happen with anxiety. Some are am anxiety, some are pm anxiety people. It kind of depends on the enviornment and your lifestyle. It can also be if you are in medicatiin and when it peaks and works its best.
How r you now im having the same as you HRT and Prozac been taking AD for 9 and half weeks x
Sill having the issue, but getting better earlier and earlier with the right medication. I am hoping this issue will resolve soon.
Hey, just now seeing this post as I recently googled my symptoms and this post describes me ro a tee! I’ve been thinking about going to a hormone specialist as I seemed to have tried everything else. Has the HRT helped and I’m curious as to what you’re both referring to when you say you’re on AD?
I really hope to hear something from you soon and this is destroying my life and I’m about to lose my job. Thanks in advance !
Sincerely,
Deb
