How is Helicobacter pylori diagnosed?

Various tests can detect H. pylori:

A breath test can confirm that you have a current H. pylori infection. A sample of your breath is analysed after you take a special drink. Note: prior to this test you should not have taken any antibiotics for at least four weeks. Also, you should not have taken a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) or H2-receptor antagonist medicine for at least two weeks. (These are acid-suppressing medicines.) Also, you should not eat anything for six hours before the test. The reason for these rules is because the medication and food can affect the test result.

An alternative test is the stool antigen test. In this test you give a pea-sized sample of your stools (faeces) which is tested for H. pylori. Note: prior to this test you should not have taken any antibiotics for at least four weeks. Also, you should not have taken a PPI or H2-receptor antagonist acid-suppressing medicine for at least two weeks.

A blood test can detect antibodies to H. pylori. This is sometimes used to confirm that you are, or have been, infected with H. pylori. However, it can take up to a year for this test to become negative once the infection has cleared. So, it is no use to confirm whether treatment has cleared the infection (if this needs to be known). If needed, the breath test or stool antigen test is usually used to check if an infection has cleared following treatment.

Sometimes a small sample (biopsy) of the lining of the stomach is taken if you have a gastroscopy (endoscopy). The sample can be tested for H. pylori.

Hi Debbie, if your oral higene is good try some probiotics or you may need to do a body cleanse followed with Chorophyll. Consult the good people at your local vitamin and nutrition store they are full of good suggestions. They sure have helped me. Not cured but good enough to live with.

Hi my dental hygiene is good I floss, brush more then 2mins top and bottom, chew gum use mouth wash, the thing is with these test it's not so easy to get them done here in UK,

thanks for replie,

every little helps. X

Hi jim

yeah my dental care is good, dentist said my teeth are fine,

my dr is rubbish keeps telling me I'm silly.

when you say body cleanse do you mean tablets.

thanks for replie

its got that bad I'm quite low about it.x

Not tablets, this product is called bowel pocket.  It's a 2week long process of scrubbing out your intestines of stubborn leftover waste material that is now coming up through your mouth as bad breath. This is not the traditional bad breath from poor oral hi gene, but from a different source your gut. I'm not a dr and im not absolute that this is your problem but just another possible thing to look at. Good luck

Hi debbie,

Check this infograph, I am sharing the causes that create bad breath.

Hi Debbie.  I sympathise.  I've had this problem for many years.  Everyone is unique and has bad breath for different reasons.  I personally don't believe bad breath comes from the stomach but thats just my personal opinion.   I could have fresh breath straight after brushing my teeth, then as soon as my mouth dries out or I dare to eat something like cheese, I have death breath again.   Everyone is looking for a solution but you really have to find the cause first.  Is your tongue coated?  Do you have slighter bigger gaps between your teeth that can trap food?  Do  you have post nasal drip?  I had the same problem with the doctor, the doctor said see the dentist, the dentist said see the doctor.  After years I discovered I had tonsil stones where food and saliva get stuck in the holes in my tonsils.  I always had a coated tongue too from eating too much sugar.    I tried all products I came across.  Found a couple that were ok.  Now using ProFresh mouth wash, have done for a few weeks and there is a big difference.  Problem is the day I don't use it, the smell comes back so I am going to have to keep on top of it.    I hope you find the cause.  If you look round this forum, you will find lots of peole have suggestions.   Good luck.
