Anyone concerned about the news on Amitriptyline and demenia?

I have been on Amitriptyline 10mgs for eight years. The latest news about the connection between Amitriptyline  and dementia is scary. Would like to get other users view on this.

Yes very concerning but can’t function without

I have tried also, can get to 5mgs and then all hell  breaks loose. But last night I chipped a tenth off and am trying again. If I can get to 5mgs, will stay there a long long time, like even six months. Then I will try to get some liquid to get off the rest.

Hi Charlene,,,,I've been on 50MG now for 7 years don't think I will ever get off them,,,but good luck,,,

Hi charline , it took me 11 months to get off of 10 mg. I first went to 5 mg and like you all hell hit, awful symptoms. I ended up getting Amitriptyline in liquid. Get off of it slow, you will do it xx

Hi Amanda, I am now struggling having reduced to 10 mg, and am nibbling a bit off that. What were your symptoms during the 11 months if it is ok to ask you.. And what are the benefits of the liquid over the tablets.

Hi jennifer,

if you dont mind me asking what do you mean by you cant function without it

Richard

Yes Amanda I have read your story, veryinteresting. I did wean down to 5mgs very slowly, like two months maybe more, but it still was too fast. This time I am going to try to get my doctor to get on board and prescribe me 8mgs. I then will get this compounded at a pharmacy not too far away. Then I will stay on 8mgs for a few months and keep going down that way, maybe to 6mgs after etc...I feel like this time I can do it. The news of it causing dementia scared me. I am 65 and already feel like my memory is suffering.

Anyone wondering what a compound pharmacy does, it will make you a pill with any amount prescribed. Then you don’t need to try and break the pill in quarters, which is so hard to do.

I can’t eat. I have chronic pancreatitis and without it, I suffer from no appetite, extreme nausea and pain. I also have chronic Lyme disease and i have severe head and neck pain without I tried coming off of it and quit cold turkey (due to what I thought was adverse effects) and I almost died. So now back on but still not feeling well at all

Dear Jennifer,

Sounds awful.  Do you take 10 mgs now.

Richard

Hi Charline,

Where do you get the liquid and why is it better

Richard.

Jennifer I've been on 50MG for six years now,,,

I take 50 mg. At least I am eating and sleeping again. I want off the medicine though.

Yes I am on 10mg for the past couple of months and I want off it already. Feel so ill,  not real ( if that makes sense), starting to get forgetful as well.  All this in the last few months. I hate it.

Hi richard, i had nausea, belching, ibs type symptoms ie cramps , diarrhoea, anxiety and became paranoid. I got it in liquid as it made it easy to drop my half a ml at a time. x

Hi Charline if your in the UK ask your GP if you can get it in liquid. I used to alternate the liquid and tablets as the liquid is much more expensive than the pills. My GP agreed to liquid as long as i used tablets  when i could. So a tablet at 10 mg , then liquid to get to 7.5 mg then, a tablet which i cut with a pill cutter (half a tab and a quarter) then liquid to get to 5 mg, then stay on half a tablet for a period of time. I used liquid to get to 2.5 mg and again stayed on a quarter of a tablet for  a month or so before my final drop. The liquid only lasts a month from opening so i had a few bottles. x

Amanda I am in Canada but can get the liquid compounded. Thanks for the suggestion I will keep it in mind. Hoping to get an appointment with my doctor in the next month or so. Hopefully he will give me a prescription for 8mgs. Until then I will keep chipping a tenth off my pill. How long has it been since you are completely off?
