Anyone had any experience with daylight bulbs (SAD)

Hi all,

I am still learning the ropes!

The last few days in UK have been dull, grey and very wet, quite autumnal in fact, and whether this is coincidence or not - today is warm and bright and I feel substantially better.

So I wondered if this is due to the light and if so if anyone has had any experience with daylight bulbs (often used for SAD (seasonal affective disorder))?

Cheers for now

Kimster

Hi Kimster,

I think there is a difference between daylight bulbs and the lights used to treat SAD. What I understand as daylight bulbs are the blue coloured ones which cast a light which is more like natural daylight than the usual bulbs used in the home which tend to have a different tinge to their light. This makes reading and working on close work less of a strain. I used to use them in the lamps I used for reading and sewing and did find them useful. Unfortunately, when the last one went last year I looked all over the place and failed to find one - certainly one of the right fitting for the light I used. Sales people looked bemused at the request!

In contrast, the therapeutic lights for SAD are special, very bright lights in a sort of box which you sit in front of for a specified amount of time so they can encourage the formation of the hormone supposed to be lacking in SAD - due to the shortening days and fewer hours of sunshine. I think it is also possible to buy them now as a standard bulb format. The special ones are pretty expensive - needless to say!

I may be wrong - but one thing I do know is that I hate these \"energy saving\" things we have had forced on us. They have now been shown NOT to be energy saving at all, they certainly do not last as long as it was claimed, they are a pain to dispose of as they should not be put into landfill and are unfit for purpose if the definition of a light bulb is something to lighten the darkness! And I'd love to know how many little old ladies have fallen on the stairs because they couldn't wait for the light to come on properly.

greeting from a rather dark and wet northern Italy - now you have your nicer weather we are getting what you have had with lots of noise and wind!

Hi Eileen

Here in the good old country you can get the blue, day light bulbs from the craft shops, sewing shops and DIY or any shop that sells most bulbs. I have a local shop in our very small town that sell everything. It's amazing, whatever you want you just ask and they find it somewhere around the back.

I asked for a folding walking stick yesterday and they had one, I thought I might have to travel to a shop that sell disabled equipment.

good luck with your search.

Spammy :o

Spammy - it was in GB that I couldn't find them! Don't bother here - just sit on the balcony  Anyway - I find handwork as good as impossible with PMR, even PMR that is very well controlled most of the time. If it's minor mending, fair enough, but anything more - forget it!
