Has anyone had surgery to straighten their knee joint out?
I thought I was just going to need a arthroscopy to fix a meniscal tear and cyst but it turns out the cause of my problem is being knock-kneed as well.
The surgeon recommended this femoral osteotomy where they basically break the bone, realign it and then screw it back together with metal plates!
I was told 9 months total recovery, 8 weeks on crutches and prolonged physio. They want to do one leg then the other. He said I'm not "bone on bone, yet" and this would buy time before knee replacement(s) are required.... I'm only 29.
I'm shocked, I wasn't expecting such a drastic recommendation. I don't feel I had adequate explanation or time to take all of the information in. I'm anxious of having surgery and the whole hospital experience as I've had surgery before and I don't want more.
But it seems if I don't have surgery I will wear my knees out and be in severe pain or require a TKR? I already take strong pain killers like smarties before doing any exercise.
Any thoughts?
my knee was seriously out of alingment like yours but I was already at the bone on bone stage.(I am 58 a big difference to your age ) I had previously had a meniscal trim but ultimitely ended up having tkr anyway. The recovery from tkr is also very long . If you are not happy about the amount of info you have ask for more, do not let the medical proffesion sway you one way or the other ,most of them will not have had major knee surgery. I do have to tell you though that although my leg is straight it is now quite a bit shorter than the other (thats the trade off I guess !) you will have to come to your own decision, but get plenty of info first, best wishes
So you had a total knee replacement, how long before you were back on you feet and how much shorter are you legs now?
I really don't want to be shorter....
I had tkr 4 weeks ago so have a long way to go yet I reckon I have lost about an inch I will be seeing surgeon next week so I will ask him if he has an exact figure. The difference in leg length will be made up with an orthoctic but I have to wait a while before that can be fitted My concern was to get rid of the pain (not got there yet though !)
